I'm considering adding tig to my mobile welding capabilities.  I'm currently running a Ranger 9 on the truck.  I can't decide if adding the equipment to the Ranger is the way to go or if I would be ok with an AC/DC Invertec V-205 that I run off the Ranger.  Does anyone have any hands on info about the invertec and its practical limits in the field ?Thanks for any help you can giveLast edited by moyersmobile; 03-29-2008 at 10:25 AM.  Brian MoyerMoyer Welding & Fabrication       LaSalle MI
Reply:Each time you convert one type of energy to another you loose some energy to heat, so burning the petrol to create electricity to then run the inverter to change the current to a welding current is very inefficient. What capabilities would you gain by running the inverter off the Ranger?Jimmy
Reply:The Ranger will do TIG just fine on SS and ferrous metals and some others. You would need a high frequency rig for aluminum.  If you need the more specialized capabilities of the v-205 that is another thing, but if you just want to be able to TIG weld, it would be like putting a receptacle adaptor in a light socket and plugging in a light bulb, or running two machines to do one job.On the other hand, The Invertec would give you much more portability. It can be carried into a job much easier than running leads from your Ranger for remote work. And will give you more flexibility in fine tuning for precise work, stick or TIG. Reply:One other thing, I don't see a mention of this unit being safe to run from generated power. Using it plugged into the Ranger may void the warrenty, and or cause damage.SA200,Ranger8,Trailblazer251NT,MM250,Dayton225AC,T  D-XL75,SpoolMate3545SGA100C,HF-15-1  RFCS-14 When I stick it, it stays stuck!
Reply:all good info thanks for the input.  The documentation on the invertec does say generated power is okay.  I would probably need the ability to  do aluminum also so HF will be needed eventuually .  I guess my biggest concern is the invertec may not be up to the task of constant use and or heavier materials. Reply:I did repair on drilling rigs for years and for the life of me can't see why a tig rig would be needed to repair anything on one.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
