Am I crazy or does this engine have 2 ports for filling the engine crankcase with oil?I recently purchased a 2002 Lincoln 300D, with the perkins diesel, and was about to change the oil.  I went looking for the fill cap, and found 2 of them.  One located on top of the cylinder head, under the air filter.  The other is on the side of the engine near the oil filter. The one on the top of the engine is clearly marked for oil, but on my used unit ,the cap is blank on the fill port on the side of the engine.  The one on top is almost inaccessible, without removing the air filter and housing. Is the one on the side of the engine for easy access?  Or is it for something other than oil? They say there are no stupid questions, but I feel silly asking this one.  It's just the first diesel engine I've ever worked on.  The lincoln manual I downloaded from their website doesn't have any pictures of the engine, just recommendations for oil type and capacity.Any help is much appreciated.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Yes, there is 2, mainly because how are you going to put oil down the cylinder head with that big ole top cover in the way........ This engine just happens to be used for other applications besides runing your Lincoln.
Reply:It's not unusual to have two or more oil fill points on an industrial engine.Just more practical to build all the covers with oil caps, than to customize for each application.
Reply:I don't know about the 300 lincoln, but I had trouble changing oil on my SA-250, untill i drilled &tapped my DRAIN plug , screwed in a hose to it and placed the end of the hose in a tool box made in the welding bed in my truck. at the end of the hose is a 1/4 turn quick open VALVE to drain the oil . has worked really well for years . i just place a drain pan under the valve , then 1/4 turn on the valve & drain . A door on the side of the bed hides the drain valve . It's actually easier to drain the oil , than it is to refill it . ( my SA-250 has the 3 cylinder Perkins D3-153  diesel engine .)Last edited by Roy Hodges; 04-10-2008 at 04:33 AM.Reason: added info[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:Yeah,  I have the hood and side panels off right now.  That's when I spotted the second oil filler port.  I was thinking to myself that changing the oil on this thing by removing the hood and the air cleaner would be a major headache; especially in the field. Thanks all for clearing up my confusion.  It slipped my mind that these perkins engines are used in more than just this one piece of equipment.
