Hey guys I'm looking to supplement my income by investing in a welder I was thinking a 200dx everlast due to cost and features. I hear some good, some bad. Wondering what people, who have the machine long term think. As well what people who have purchased the newer generation of machines think. Also what have you guys done to make some money on the side?We just purchased our first home and the house has a nice 26x20 garage 200a panel and heated floors. Move in next month Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkif you can step across it I can weld it.
Reply:If your investing for the long term id look onto a Miller Syncrowave Or Dynasty. You will out grow the Everlast and find it wont be up to your expectations.
Reply:That's one thing I was considering I was even looking at the precision tig 225 but I'm worried my electricity bill will be the only thing I'm paying for. I hear they are power hogs. With the everlast I was thinking buy it outright and adventually upgrade to the dynasty 200.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkif you can step across it I can weld it.
Reply:I own two Everlast welders, and got to run one of their Mig machines. For the money they are fantastic! But I’ll let you in on a little secret, if you plan on doing any aluminum work, there have been times when my Dynasty 300 was to small. That’s why I keep a bottle of helium on hand.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:Very few guys I know who aren't serious manage to really supplement their income welding. Sure you see money coming in, but few actually track money that is also going out. Dropping $1000-2000 in welding gear and equipment like saws, grinders and consumables takes quite a while to offset if you are just doing small jobs. Many times those jobs themselves aren't really making money to begin with, let alone paying back the money spent on equipment. It's easy to do a small repair and charge the guy $50 plus steel. Most think they "made" money. However few think about what fuel cost them to go get the materials, the grinding and sanding disks they bought a few months back, the paint they used that was left over from something else, misc hardware and so on. A business, tracks all that stuff and then more. If not, the cost of those items comes out of the $50. Next thing you realize, you PAID to do the work for someone else, and your $1000-2000 in gear hasn't been reduced in cost, just used up more, When it's all used up and won't work any more, you get to spend more money to "make" money, even though you may not have paid off the 1st one yet. Also keep in mind in today's society, you touch it, you are "it" as far as liability is concerned. It doesn't even matter if it was your fault, you can get sued because you should have seen the problem and fixed it. Insurance is a very smart move if you plan to make money. Down side is insurance often is fairly expensive, even for small policies.  I figure on a bit over $2K a year just to cover my general liability policy for my general contracting work. "Welding" sets off all sorts of alarms for insurance companies, and they charge accordingly. "Side" work is a good way to have your hobby help pay for itself, but chances are you'll spend more on gear and so on than you will recoup making money unless it's your full time job. Don't really count on it to bring in extra spending income on average..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:Years ago one of the estimators for a company I was working for. We tried to go out on our own. Closest we came to getting a job was third. Every body was taking the work for less than we could buy the material for. Reply:I want to eventually go out on my own that would be great and for me personally its 60$/hr to cover wage and electricity. 30$ minimum charge don't care if it's a minute or 30mins. And I know that I'll have to take a box of discs count them take the price multiply by 10% then divide by x to get each individual cost if I have to use 1 rod the dress the weld you get charged one rod plus the disc plus my time. Then again material $ x % = y, and you get your material cost. I am a career welder btw I'm just sick of making other people rich and getting pennies on the dollar.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkif you can step across it I can weld it.

Reply:You be fine with the everlast. I run my own company with green and blue machines I havent outgrown anything since my green tig has every known setting to man lol. We have a dynast in the shop too not mine but for 4 times the money its just not worth it for me. I have the ext I think it does just as good as the dynasty at 99% of stuff  dysnastys arc is a little more stable but not by much. I buy them bc they have a 5 year warranty and with inverter tech going so fast I would rather upgrade in 5 years anyway. Also our board in our dynasty went our and cost 1700. right after its warranty. I keep mine 4 years sell with warranty then upgrade. I guess I am a pariah but it makes sense for my bussiness plan.
Reply:Absolutely it makes sense seeing how welders are more and more like computers. Have you had to deal with ever lasts warranty service?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkif you can step across it I can weld it.
Reply:Building and installing gates is pretty decent supplemental income. I used to do lots of rv and man gates, but am building some much more higher end stuff I don't have time for them any more. $125 per foot was the basic charge for a tube frame with wood slats gate a little 3' gate takes about an hour to build and an hour to install and will cost you maybe $25 for materials.
Reply:Your own business can be tough. One of my past employers got tired of a competitor beating him out for many jobs. He fixed it; he bought him out ! I was never a owner but running work was a pain sometimes. The 8 hour only day will not happen, lost sleep, and worried about getting paid. Good luck if and when you go for it. Just don't burn a bridge behind you.
Reply:Go better than Everlast, and perhaps it's not a Miller Dynasty, but an HTP 221 will be a worthwhile investment.  Still haven't regretted purchasing mine.  November is just around the corner, and they're [likely] to post up their Black Friday sale where you can save $200 + $100 in free accessories.  A water-cooled setup with 25ft hoses/foot pedal will run you ~$2700 to your door.  It TIG [and stick] welds like a dream.  You'd need at least another ~$400 for just a Dynasty200dx machine-alone (not that it ain't worth it, just saying ) 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:Yeah out of my three welder from them one had a bad board fixed it right away. great service. I am not working for them or really even a fan boy.I just think they are a good deal and most people who comment badly either havnt welded or its been 5 years ( they really started off kinda horrible) If  they start sucking I will switch to something else. I wont do a Dynasty until they have 5 year on their boards since They are more than a entire everlast machine.

Reply:If your hobby makes money you can write off the expenses up to the amount of the expenses. This would be a more practical approach for part time.Unless you weld full time and/or have a sure source of production work that can happen after hours it seems pretty unlikely that you will be raking in Enough Benjamins to have any left over after consumables.Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk

Reply:I would say get something like the AHP200X that's under $700 on Amazon.   Start with it and put all available profit toward saving for a top line machine like ESAB, red, blue etc.    It's so cheap from a business standpoint you always have a backup machine if your main brand name one had to go in for warranty etc.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:See I want to use it to practice welding pipe that's why I was thinking a machine that runs 6010 well. I'm not new to tig welding but I'm no veteran. The plan was adventually upgrade to a miller 200dx.Amazon canada doesn't sell the ahp which I would even be hesitant on. Everlast even seems to have some sort of a rep.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkif you can step across it I can weld it.

A few observations I will add here. Two years ago I decided I wanted to try tig so I purchased an 200DX from Everlast Canada.  They provided great info, pricing and quick shipping. Had it a year and only tried it a few times when a kid (now a grown man with a job with Hydro) that used to work on the farm was looking for one also. By then prices had gone up. He gave me my original purchase price (less freight) for it and we were both happy. As to making money on the side, don't worry you'll do okay there. As to going out on your own, well I'll just say that being a proficient welder is only a small part of having your own successful business. Anyway, best of luck.:
Reply:I think it is a bad attitude to want to do your own thing because you are tired of making other people rich.I wish I had a nickle for each time I heard that from a disgruntled worker who obviously has no idea what it takes to have a business. Its so simple go get yourself rich but they keep coming back each day making someone else rich. I don't get it. If a guy is getting rich the cost of a Dynasty is pretty trivial. I don't care what Everlast has for a warranty good luck getting it done as you can see evidence all over the web at how the like to do and then how rich are you getting waiting for your warranty to happen. One welder is not going to cut it either when you got work stacked up over your piles of gold.Keep us informed on your bank account tally.

Reply:Just my two cents on the side work... I work welding full time average 50 hour weeks but still find time to do jobs on the side. Just welded a piece of 2x2x1/4 angle on a trailer, easy $150. Just printed out a bill for welding out five aluminum dock plates, not as easy $775. Last weekend welded two hinges on a metal gate, super easy $40. Spent an hour about a month ago welding a smoke stack and hinges on a smoker, $50 plus some free mild steel sheet metal. Repaired some cracks in a set of headers, took 30 min made $30. All this work has been done with the 2014 model ahp alpha tig which I have a ck water cooled adapter and 25' ck water cooled torch for which cost a few bucks but has more than paid for itself. Don't let the cost of buying equipment deter you, if you are good at what you do and put yourself out there the work will come. On top of the side welding projects I have I'm looking at a crossbow, double barrel shotgun and ak47 pistol waiting on my attention plus I have a logo to design for an event a friend is organizing. Not to mention all the honeydo's my wife gives me. My biggest problem with side jobs is finding time to go fishing Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:FWIW, I cannot imagine why you would not be buying an engine powered welder if your actually tying to make a run at side money.  I made a run at it when I completed welding school and did well at welding on farm equipment.  Travel to location, repair x,y,z... But nowhere near enough to live on.  IMO, it sounds like you really need a better job.  The guys I work with make well into 6 figures and work more than I can imagine...Is moving to get better work an option? What are your skills?1981 Lincoln SA 200Miller Trailblazer 302gMiller 211 Mig Welder w/ AutosetI'm learning to stick metal together

Reply:I'm working on it, I made some bad choices and that kinda stuck me in a rut but now that we have a house with a shop that's the plan hence why I'm asking for suggestions on the machines I was thinking a precision tig 225 I've welded with one I like it and the price is better then a dynasty only flaw is the mobility. Also I'm going for my red seal I feel it would look better as a business. I'm 25 been welding for 5 years now professionally went to school when I was 19 took a course that taught us tig mig stick with various rods and materials and basic fab skills, before that I was in metal shops in high school and just loved metal working built things from low rider bikes to gokarts that we took to brainerd for mileage competition, I rebuilt a 1968 c10 and a 1969 cb750 Honda I have some a little machining experience not a whole lot.So now that I've bought a house it's time to build the shop, supplement the income with a marketable skill and enjoy what I build.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalkif you can step across it I can weld it.
