Picked out some bits of steel from the scrap bins in the fab yard today (with permission from the yard superintendent). Not sure what I'll do with them yet beyond practicing cuts and welds. I think I'm going to try to come up with a useful project and see if I can build it.Sent from my XT1032 using TapatalkTweco Fabricator 211i
Reply:Nice! How about some super low car ramps? Over engineer them and sell them on to a local drift guy or girl?
Reply:AWESOME ! Nothing better then free steel . Continue to get more and build a rack to store it in. Here's a post by ChrisT http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...l-storage-rack.  His is pretty fancy lookin and mine is post # 19  made of cutoffs  and some  plastic cases , works well. Build the storage rack so as you bring the material home you have it organized. You can never have too many pieces.
Reply:It's all good stuff you have there, especially for free!
Reply:I find bits of steel like that in our town dumpster. I get it out and keep it as I know I'll find some use for it. Even if the use is to just play with the welder when I have nothing else to do. Chad
Reply:Right now I'm thinking a bottle rack is probably a pretty good idea, and I think I've got enough steel to make it if I don't screw anything up.Sent from my XT1032 using TapatalkTweco Fabricator 211i
Reply:Next time you get to pick thru the scrap metal pile, load up more than what you got this time. That double cab Tacoma of yours will handle more weight than you have in it there. That will increase your options of what you can make from it.
Reply:Oh I know what the Taco can take, that was just all that was in the one bin next to the hydraulic package I was testing all day that I wouldn't have needed a forklift at my house to move. Everything else were chunks of 3-6" plate too small to be useful to work but to heavy for me to even pick up. It'll be a constant process though. If I'm doing a big project (like the work table/toolbox/trailer combo I'm designing) I'll see what the yard can pull from our drop pile and have procurement order the rest from the steel yard 5mi from my house.Sent from my XT1032 using TapatalkTweco Fabricator 211i
Reply:Many years ago when I was first getting started in the welding learning stage I had a large fabrication company let me have several hundred pounds of steel a month to practice welding on.   The deal was that I was to  bring all my welds back for the foreman to check and see how I was doing with my welding.  Then we didn't have a mig and used 6011, 6013 and 7018 rods.. Scrap steel was about 1.5 cents a lb but I was broke and barely could afford rods. After I got to know them and honored their wishes of returning all the steel, They would allow me to keep several  pieces for my own little projects.  I don't think OSHA  was birddogging everyone back then as bad and I could go in and out of part of their plant with only safety glasses.Maybe your company will let you continue to let you have steel if you carry your scrap back in and dump it in the dumpster.  Just a thought.
Reply:A engine hoist is cheap and can come in handy for heavy stuff and even to hold or balance something too. Maybe get a steel drum or heavy plastic drum to use for the scraps. Get as much as you can, it really short pieces. It's nice to have short stuff instead of needing 6'' and cutting it from a 10' piece.

Reply:The more "FREE" Scrap, the better!Fabbing and repairing uses lots of smaller pieces!
Reply:I would love to have a free source of scrap. But there is a local steel company that lets me pick through their drops and cuts for like 10-20 cents a pound or so (on average, as best I can tell). We roll in, pick through the bin, and they never even weigh it. The guy will look at the pile and says something like: "ahh I don't know...give me $10" . Seems like a pretty fair deal.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:That's a good haul.  Ive got an old pallet out back that is loaded with stuff like that. The stuff was given to me at least 20 years ago and I usually find something in that pile that I can clean up and use.    You are on your way now to collecting some good stuff for future projects.   Keep it up.

Reply:I love free things! I'm thinking a table frame or try to check pinterest! Lots of ideas on that site.PlasmaCam CNC cutterLathe and Band SawClamps
Reply:A table frame may very well be in the works. I have plans for a project table/toolbox on a trailer base. That may end up being a project I build at work on a weekend so I can do some NDE on it before I put anything on the road.Sent from my XT1032 using TapatalkTweco Fabricator 211i
