i know a guy that is sell a lincoln pipeliner for 500obo....doesnt even know its a lincoln says he thinks its a homelite or somthing lol.  I got some pictures sent to me and its def a pipeliner long hood so im saying its a sa 200. Not sure of the year... runs and welds just repainted it and its on a nice little trailer. what should i look for when i go look at anything special?   and is this a good deal i belive it is...
Reply:also how do i tell what year it is and for sure if it is a sa200 and not a 300
Reply:As far as identification, search on ebay or somewhere for pics of an SA-200, then compare them to the machine you're looking at.  A good running machine that needs nothing is worth $500 IMO.  However, there are a lot of money-pit SA-200's around waiting for you to latch onto.  Here are some examples that have happened to me.   One machine I bought was repainted, supposedly the engine was just rebuilt, but it didn't have a battery or gas, and needed a carb rebuild and some linkage parts to be complete.  Took the guy's word for it - when I got it home and started it, it had an awful knock, blew blue smoke, and had low compression on the back 2 cylinders.   I got it for $500 - should have known something was wrong, right?  Another machine I got for $500 carried decent oil pressure and had great compression, but had a bad rear main seal leak.  Pulled the generator off of the engine, pulled the engine apart to redo the seal, and guess what?  A wiped-out rear main bearing, which had taken the crankshaft with it.  When I get done with these two machines they'll be good as new, but I'll have a fair amount of expense in engine work, not to mention my labor. All I'm saying is, don't believe everything you're told.  Go over the machine with a fine-toothed comb.PS - Are you sure he isn't saying it's a Hobart?Last edited by tbone550; 07-26-2011 at 09:28 PM.
Reply:no he said homelite lol and from what i see its DEF a sa200... and it he said he will fire it up right there for me and let me try it out... no taking it home to put this and that in it right away anyway.
Reply:If it runs and welds for $500. it's worth it. If it has leads it's even better. Send us the serial # when you get it and we'll tell you date of manufacture. Pictures are appreciated also.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:What you brought home is a 1967 Red Face. Should make you a great welder. Reply:are the motors a conential? Also how do u tel the year?
Reply:Continental Red Seal motor. I have a pdf. file I got from the Lincoln website, but they have changed their website to the point that I can't tell you how to get the file yourself. The forum attachment program will not let me attach it here. because it's too large of a file. If you will PM me your email address, and your email address supports enough content I can send it that way.First, if you're going to own an SA200 then go here http://www.mylincolnelectric.com/Cat...ualsearch.aspx and get the correct Operator's Manual based on your units Code#As stated above, this website has changed. You can still get what you need, but you have to join the website first. Then put http://billswelderrepair.com/home.html,http://www.hybriweld.com  http://www.weldmart.com/default.htm, http://www.stumpfweldingsupplies.com/index.html and http://www.aws.org/cgi-bin/mwf/board_show.pl?bid=44 in your favorites list for parts and valuable information. Kaye and Bill at Bill's Welder Repair are awesome for telephone technical support and I'm sure the others are as well. And go here http://www.weldmart.com/SA200%20CATA...EST%20FORM.htm to request your free CD on the SA200 from Weldmart  No SA200 owner should be without one.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:well i tried to run it today and it starts up and runs for a few seconds and then sputters out and dies... i had it going for probly 3 or 4 mins then sputterd out and died... any ideas? when i was buying it it fired right up and i welded with it and it ran for awhile but now that i got it home its doing this......
Reply:The ride home probably jarred some crud from the ride home.
Reply:Darn edit timer. I meant to say the 500 mile ride probably jarred some crud or gunk loose from the tank or carb.
Reply:thats the only thing i can think of its on the setament bowl and a inline filter on it and they both have some stuff in them but nothing major looking... i guess i should start with cleaning them and cleaning the carb? cause i just went and put a little more gas in it and ran good for a few mins. then suppered out and died, you can kinda save it from dieing a little bit by choking it but then sooner or later it still dies.
Reply:Your machine is 44 yrs old. Depending on how well it was taken care of & how many different hands have used it will determine how much you need to do to have a dependable welder. Look down into the gas tank with a good flashlight. Many of these tanks that old need cleaning or replacing. Clean the sediment bowl, filter & look at the carburetor. A good rebuild kit isn't that expensive. Clean the air filter good too, lots of people overlook these. The valves on your machine are made for leaded fuel. They are solid valves and need re-adjusted every 500 hours or so. There is lots of info to be had on the SA 200 here and at the AWS Forum. Take the time to read some or all of it and pretty quick you'll have a welder w/bragging rights. These machines are bullet proof and while limited are one of the best welders to be had.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:well i got the skins off tonight and took the carb off and air filter...going to start there with cleaning all that and pulling the tank off and cleaning it out any ideas there??? its not to bad but its on setament all over the bottom of it.  Also where would be a good place to get a carb rebuild kit? Here are some pics of it the old farmer i bought it from had it for 20 years and didnt even know what brand it was! He gave it a nice blue paint job lol, but everything is blue under the hood also that shouldnt be original is it? Attached Images
Reply:AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA I LOVE the color....keep it that way!!!!As far as cleaning the tank goes look up electrolysis cleaning process you use a battery charger and a jump pack a bolt for a electrode use a spray paint can lid drill a hole in it for the bolt  and hook the positive side up to the bolt in the filler neck hook the ground up to the tank, fill the tank with water , use powder laundry detergent u are looking for roughly 10 amps , i cleaned a goldwing gas tank this way , came back 14 hours looked brand new!!! ill post a picture it even cleaned the reserve pick up tube that was clogged. Reply:well went to napa today and and got some new plugs, fuel filter, and a carb rebuild kit... now i just gota figure out the easiest way to clean the tank and keep it staying that way!

Reply:yeah i just really wish they hadnt of repainted all of the motor and gen!
Reply:Perhaps the easiest way to remove it would be a rag and laquer thinner or cover the air holes with tape and spray on aircraft stripper and pressure wash it all off?I forgot how to change this.
Reply:true... i seen another one on youtube that had a blue motor and blue gen? that wasnt stock was it?  Got the carb rebuilt tonight, new plugs, and got the tank off now im just trying to find the best idea.  Lawson Welding LLC did you coat the tank with anything after you got done.I didn't you can see the water line in the tank i did where the rust was still there, i couldn't get it up high enough without it running out of the filler tube as it had a gas gauge hole where i put the electrode in, and it was pretty easy to get a brush down in there. The way i looked at it, the tanks aren't coated to begin with, so as long as you keep them full when your not using it very often i wouldn't see much problem with rust occurring but there is a ceramic coating i believe you can use to line the tanks with. Hey i sent ya a private message btw.I forgot how to change this.
Reply:In the old days gasoline didn't have alcohol in it.  Alcohol attracts and absorbs water and causes rusty tanks bigtime. You might try to Google "POR-15".  They have a product to coat the inside of your tank.Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:i got it all cleaned out and coated it with some red kote product... seems to be perdy good.  Cleaned it by sloshing punch slugs with just a little gas in it and knocked off all the loose rust and made it darn near smooth as new really! now i just have to wait for the coating to dry up and will see how she runs now!
Reply:well i got it all buttond back up and so far runs like a top! Is it going to hurt it to run a straight pipe on it?
Reply:No, they came with straight pipes.
Reply:thats what i thought wasnt sure tho
Reply:Does anyone put in lead additive in with there gas? should i?
