looking for a nice portable machine for mostly thin metal, but if needed could do 1/4.
Reply:I can't speak to the ESAB, but I see Miller Maxstar 150's almost exclusively on job sites out here, doing gate and decorative work. I can think of 5 different guys in the last 2 months I've seen with them. They are awesomely tiny and seem to handle fairly heavy work easily.

Reply:I don't know about the Esab but I have a Maxstar 150STL. Welds 3/32-1/8" 7018 very nice and tig welds great.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:The ESAB has a slightly better duty cycle on the high end and they claim it will run 6010 which the Maxstar won't I've personally run a Maxstar with 1/8 6011 rods and I got no complaints.  My 2200 has proven all it's claims and I've pretty much been converted to an ESAB fan. I don't think you'll be disappointed in either machine. ESAB also has the 100 day guarantee.NickESAB CaddyTig 2200iPowermax 45MM140 (Sold)
Reply:Thank for the information. I think I'll lean towards the miller.
Reply:Esab miniarcs are pretty decent machines. I have a miniarc 130 and really like it, it's an older machine but very portable and very useful and dependable. Miller maxstar 150 is a good machine too, I have used them alot for tig welding stainless at work. I would go for the esab for sure though.IAMAW Local 330Airco 300 AC/DC HeliwelderAirco Dip-Pak 200 with Profax spool gunPowr-Kraft AC225Everlast PowerArc 200stBuffalo Forge No.21 drill pressSpeedglas 9100xxAirco, Oxweld, Purox, Victor torchesLincoln Ranger 8

Reply:Anybody got pictures of these machines...Portable...  Gas powered ?.I have an old Lincoln 150 portable AC welder...  10 hp Kohler engineStill works great...  welder and 115/230 powerI found a good Hobart AC stick that compares to regular 7018..   Out standing in my Field...  Hmmm.. Reply:i never worked with esab but have the miller maxstar 150. better forget about running 6010 on this machine. the arc extinguishes every second or so. i heard it's something about the whip and pause technique that causes this.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla

Reply:PS  Thanks for the Link...NOW I see what youz guyz are calling portable....Hmmm,  Wasn't what I thought...In that case...  My MIG is portable...Just gotta plug it into my portable Lincoln....That is.....  To be outstanding in my Field.....Gotta Fly.....Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down...

Reply:Here's the one time I've used one. Wiring up the Dialarc 250 (pictured) or getting a truck to go get the TB302 again was just too much of a hassle and it did the job just fine. This was 1/8 6011 @ 90 amps on 110v power. It's a tiny little machine and the stinger will make you say aww NickESAB CaddyTig 2200iPowermax 45MM140 (Sold)

Reply:I have the miller 150 sth and its nice but I like what ive read on esab 161, but on internet??? I know the hypocrisy on that statement, on stick the 150s{ stick only }have run better than my sth , must be how there setup, maybe im wrong, ran several 150s machines on jobs different machines all fine didn't have rod issues but on the two tig combo setups ive used { sth & stl }seemed to be a lesser of a stick machine, if I had to do again for stick only I might lean towards the esab 161 by reputation only, for combo work I like my sth it has a far better arc on tig than my dynasty or any other miller I have ever used, almost as good {smooth} starts and stops as a Lincoln precision tig which to me is the nicest
Reply:The TA 161S is comparably priced and runs just as good as a Maxstar 150.  It also comes standard with lift arc tig function, but no remote voltage.  Never tried 6010 though.
Reply:You can buy 2 ESAB mini arc 161 for the price of 1 Miller Maxstar 150 s  .http://www.threemulesweld.com/esab161ltsThat's a very good price from Three Mules for the ESAB.  They also have a good deal on the Thermal Arc 161S with the regulator & TIG torch - $540. It's less than the price of the same unit without the torch/reg.  ???http://www.threemulesweld.com/TA161S_TIG"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:We have some earlier 150 Maxstars. Have no problems running LINCOLN FLEETWELD 5P 6010 or their EXCALIBUR 7018. Great little machine for stainless too.
Reply:I know Everlast is basically a bad word around here but look at a Powerarc series.  They are ultra portable igbt inverter machines. They are a fraction of the cost of the Maxstar units and run very nicely.  I have a 140st that easily burns 1/8" 7018 electrodes and is lift start tig ready out of the box.  Also operates on 110 and 220v and includes the adapter. Jody over at welding tips and tricks did a comparison test between it and the Maxstar 150 and liked both of them a lot.  Best $275 I ever spent.
Reply:400 bucks I would buy the esab if your looking for stick, a member here said there nice on 6010 if you look at my posts maybe you can find what he has to say

Reply:I just bought the ESAB Miniarc 161LTS and couldnt be more impressed.I got the stick version and the opted for a small CK torch for lift ARC tig. I was only out a bit over $500 for every thing torch and all. I got it for automotive work .Comparing the tig to my Lincoln pt 225 its every bit as good on 22gauge thru 1/8,its taking some getting used to not having a pedal and high freq and the gas valve on the torch vs a built in solenoid but works out real good for out of position working on cars or trucks, when I first got it I burned 7018 passes for upwards of an hour straight and didnt notice any drop in its duty cycle,I feel its very capable of 1/4 ...Im really suprised there not more popular one of the first passes I made with the tig on 16 gauge..jimEsab Multimaster 260Esab Caddy160IEsab 161 STLESAB powercut 650Esab 220i tigLincoln Precision Tig 225Lincoln IdealArc 250INE SKYLINE 1500Klutch 140iMEASURE TWICE IS FOR MORONS
Reply:The Miniarc 161LTS seems to be the best bang for the buck in that class of welder at present from a major company.  The equivalent TA 161 units seem overpriced in comparison.  Oddly, it appears that ESAB sells some units in Europe that are almost identical to the TA ones (BuddyARC & BuddyTIG).  I guess TA has an exclusive here.  I wonder if that will change now that ESAB & Victor/TA/etc.  are both owned by the same parent company."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Jim,Hope you enjoy the ESAB MiniArc 161 as much as I do mine.  Congrats on a fine purchase.  BTW, are you running yours on 115VAC or 230VAC?

Reply:Originally Posted by tapwelder10 yrs ago, I paid $1100 for my ESAB miniarc 150aps.  Stick only.  I bought a foot pedal and torch separate.  I never use the foot pedal for tig. It is a nice welder- been steady for 10 yrs.  Fan gets dirt  or grass in it, if don't watch where I sit it while working.   When I purchased it, it ran on 110v better than my miller 150.  Though, I use it on 220v off a 5k peak, honda generator almost exclusively.

Reply:Originally Posted by shortfusetapwelder, can you run the full 150 amps on 220V from the generator with your ESAB?  (I'm assuming the max output is 150e amps, seeing as the newer MiniArc 160 specs out at 160 amps max with 220V).
Reply:Originally Posted by jim cafarelliThanks shortfuse I do really like it,Super impressed with it,and for the price...cant beat it..for lift tig I been using it on 110.What I found is using the 110 side it has more in it then my breaker will hold ,I threw the breaker playing around with on the stick side
Reply:Thanks for the tip shortfuse ,,,I have 220 out there if I need it and that is what I have on the 110 a 20amp with 12 gauge....with the 30 amp and 10 gauge were you able to max it out? jimYou might consider doing what I did for using the 161 on a 115VAC circuit.  I only tripped my 20A breaker one time (with stick) out of many welding sessions on 115V with 110amps output.  That was with a 20A breaker and 12GA Romex wiring.I upgraded my breaker to a 30A one, ran 10GA Romex for the welder circuit, and put in a 20A receptacle to match the ESAB 115V plug.  It's the only machine on that circuit.  The male plug and cable for the 161 is plenty heavy to use on that circuit and a 20A receptacle is fine.  Since I upgraded the circuit, I've never tripped a breaker running at the max for 115V which is 110amps on the welder.[/QUOTE]Esab Multimaster 260Esab Caddy160IEsab 161 STLESAB powercut 650Esab 220i tigLincoln Precision Tig 225Lincoln IdealArc 250INE SKYLINE 1500Klutch 140iMEASURE TWICE IS FOR MORONS
