I've been looking into taking a dive into buy my very first horizontal bandsaw and I'm driving myself insane with trying to decide on a model that will suit my needs now and for at least for awhile after that. I have set my budget to $1,500, although I do need to buy one at a place where I can make payments on it. I'd be willing to spend more if it means getting a better quality saw that will last me for a long time. I have been looking at a Jet 7x12 (J-3410) saw, but I don't really know anything about these saws. What is the quality in comparison to other brands, are they a pain in the *** to change the angle on for different cuts and should I just get a mitering-type bandsaw instead? I have heard that they are decent saws, but I'm sure a Baileigh or Ellis would be better, but also more expensive. What kind of local places would even sell horizontal bandsaws like those?
Reply:i didnt know you could even buy a $1500 saw and make payments on it... sure you could make payments using a credit card, but i've never heard of anyone buying a saw on a payment plan..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:how big of material you wanting to cut? about the biggest stuff i mess with is 3inch square tubing, i bought a Buffalo 4x6 horizontal saw years ago, it'll cut a little over 45degrees.. i've owned it for around 10yrs and give about $150 for it back then, it is still going strong.. i use it all the time... its a little slow on the larger stuff, but it serves its purpose.. if your wanting one of the mitre base saws, Jet sells a 5x6 for around $650-$750, its going to depend how big of material you need to cut.. Jet is an import, it wouldnt bother me for a saw though. ed mack that posts on here bought a grizzly horizontal mitre saw that looked decent also..Last edited by brucer; 08-21-2011 at 10:54 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:I'm not sure if this holds true for metal bandsaws, haven't looked yet, but Grizzly has come to surpass Jet & Powermatic with not only the price now but the quality as well of their wood bandsaws. Even Fine Woodworking agrees with the ratings of Grizzly now. I couldn't be happier with the 17" I have in the wood shop. It's definitely worth looking into if you were going to consider the jet instead of an American made Ellis, Especially when jet is a couple hundred more. I think the 7x12 with coolant, hydraulic downfeed control, 4 speeds is $825.Millermatic 211 Lincoln Idealarc 250-250, ~500lb water cooled tig
Reply:I got mine off craigslist. it was a 10X16 wilton with a cracked casting 400.00 for the saw and 150.00 to have it fixed. it also had the coolant pump and the fluid heater for outdoor use. it doesnt hurt to look at used and you can repower to single phase fairly cheap if needed.Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.
Reply:That Jet is an excellent saw. I have used that model a bit. The owner paid a bit less when he purchased it 6 or 10 yrs ago. It has sawn a lot of iron. Makes good clean 7 plumb cuts if the stodk is held level. With a little adapting you can make a depth stop and longer length stop for repetitive cuts. Good tool if it is your price range, it will pay for itself
Reply:not sure how southern tools stays open. there way over pricedellis is the best and made in the usa my grizzle has worked great and not made in china Attached Images
Reply:I got a used Carolina HD10 on CL for $175 in great shape (actually got it for time spent rebuilding a buddies carburetor...but the purchase price he paid for it was $175). I believe the HD10 is an 8.5"x13.5" which is plenty big (at least for me...the guys here who rebuild big rigs would probably have something substantially larger). The only thing I really have left on the list to do to it is to add a flood collant system (about another $140) and do add some modifications to the clamping system so that I can cut tighter miters (about $0 + some scrap steel + time).--Wintermute"No man's knowledge here can go beyond his experience." - John Lockewww.improvised-engineering.comManufacturer Agnostic:Blood----------Sweat---------Tears----|------------------|----------------|----Lincoln Red, Miller Blue, Esab Yellow
Reply:I keep going back and forth about whether I want to buy 5x8 or something like a 7x12 because I would always rather get something that is overkill than something that falls short of my needs. I found a brand new Jet 5x8 for as low at $643 here http://www.toolmarts.com/JET/414461.html. I'd like to spend under $800 because that's my current credit card limit and that way I'll be able to pay it off over a month or 2 as I get more money. I don't think I'll be cutting anything bigger than 3 or 4 inch and if I do I'll just use a vertical bandsaw or cutting torch depending on how thick it is. I also just bought a brand new Miller Dynasty 200DX today, so I need to watch what I spend money on for a bit. |
