I am about to purshase a new Lincoln 180 machine.  My local Lowes store has them on sale for $620.  However, I have noticed a ton of NIB Lincoln 180 machines on ebay.  I don't see Millers or Hobarts sold like this.  They are listed by everyone from Pawnshops to Jewerly stores not just welding supply houses.  Where do they get these from?  Anything wrong with them?  I just cann't figure out what the deal is here.  Anyone know?
Reply:There are more Millers on ebay than Lincolns and probably more Hobarts too. Look in welding under business and industrial. Pawn shops and some jewelry stores will take anything in trade. Anyone who wants to get set up with a Lincoln distributor can sell Lincoln machines. Those are retail machines and not the industrial ones. I bought one of my engine drives at Sam's Club. Lowes actually has a lot more Lincoln machines available than you see in the stores including the big engine drives like the Vantage. The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
Reply:Is it an SP-180T or a 180C ?
Reply:It didn't have a model number other than 180 on it that I saw but it did NOT have "infinite" voltage controll.  I thought that the retail and intustrial machines were the same with the exception of the voltage control.  I not a professional just looking for a machine for my garage with the ability to due 1/4 to 5/16 max.  I really don't care about what brand just looking for a good machine for a good price and everyone I have talked to told me not to get a 110v machine.    Jolly Roger.... I work over by the Huey Bridge.  What part of New Orleans you at?

Reply:The 180 sold at Lowes is the same machine as the SP 180 T sold at the LWSSP-180Thttp://content.lincolnelectric.com/p...ature/e763.pdfPro Mig 180 (Lowes)http://content.lincolnelectric.com/p...ature/e727.pdfWeld on brothaEd Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:The Lowes' machines are certainly not junk. The only issue is that typically, the ones sold at Lowes do not have the infinitely variabble power control. I personally have bought my last tapped machine. i lived with a Lincoln Tombstone for years as my first welder and I got tired of chasing a good setting. I have the Lincoln SP 175  Plus which has the variable power setting contorl and I specifically bought that model to get the variable control. I found I had to go to the internet for one. I tried to get one from the local Lincoln dealer and they had them but they were straight retail plus tax. I got mine for a couple of hundred less with no tax and free shipping.
Reply:I got my Lincoln 180 three months ago from Lowes when it was $620 during the 15% off tool sale ($527 + tax). No problems yet; at least any I would know I've always used my 225 Lincoln stick that I got from Lowes in high school 10 years ago.I actually bought two migs; the first one looked like it had fallen out of the bottom of the box (no damage to cardboard but the welder was smashed) and I returned it with no problems (they didn't even look in the box to see if there really was a welder in there let alone any of the parts) and got the only other one.Last edited by weekender; 07-07-2008 at 03:09 AM.Reason: spelling
Reply:I found my Lincoln Pro Mig 180 on Craigslist last year brand new in the un-opened box for $400.00 I have been very happy with it. I just ordered my spoolgun and it shipped today. The main reason I was looking at the lincoln was because of the spoolgun option at a cost I could justify. The only thing that bothers me about the lincoln in it is made in Mexico, Miller and Hobart are made in USA.
