Did this to cap a spiral stair postx. I did not want a ball and it is a 6 inch post, so a ball would be massive. Google'd the formula for making the pattern. It is recommended 6 segments minimum, however, more segments would have been better for a smoother dome. I worked a long time to get it roundish. Initially, I had planned on making it directly on the spiral, glad I didn't. I would have been rotating the spiral a few inches at a time to get comfortable. Anyway, came out well. Welded a positioning ring inside and jb weld it to the post. Attached Images
Reply:Looks fine from my house. Mr. HE
Reply:I think it turned out real nice. They do sell 6" half ball? Post caps like that. Just in case you want to save some time. But I know fabricating stuff is half the fun sometimes.
Reply:Thanks. Better planning and I would have ordered a dome. Initially I wanted to make it directly on the spiral. Then too late in the game to order. Perhaps, a task not to be repeated. However, I also hate the fit of generic junk cast iron parts. I have a some items from King Metals that were to expensive to send back, yet a bunch of work to make look satisfactory for me.

Reply:Looked pretty rough on the cuts, still a bit rough on the in-process grinding pic, pretty nice on the final painted pic.Looks like you did some 'heat-n-beat' to fold over the segments, right? Some google-fu turns up a bunch of post pipe caps.http://www.sharpeproducts.com/store/...pipe-tube-capshttp://nedsstructuralpipeandsteel.co...me-post-caps-2http://www.prescottsupply.com/6inchsteelpipecaps.aspxetc, etc, etc No endorsement implied, yadda, yadda, yadda. Reply:Thanks for the links. Ironically, I did not see any for 6" tubing.
Reply:King metals has them in 6"
Reply:The link I posed was for pipe, not tubing. You are right that caps for tubing would be difficult to find. I did not realize you were using tubing.
Reply:King does sell the hemispheres in 6". Thanks for all the links. |
