What kind of oil to run in a Kohler CH680? I have a ton of Rotella T6 5W-40. AMSOIL 10W-30 small engine?  Any thoughts? Thanks, Matt!

Reply:I run 5-40 rotella in my Hobart. It has a 23 horse Kohler in it.
Reply:The amsoil 10w30 would be a treat for that motor. Full synthetic is good stuff. What does your manual recommend?I run 5w30 in winter and 10w30 in summer in my old bluestar.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:I run Pennzoil 10W30 in the Kohlers in my Bobcat, and John Deere and Craftsman mowers. They all thrive on it just fine. You say you have a ton of the other oils, so that would be about four 55 gallon drums of it, right? Is that a ton of each, or a ton combined?
Reply:By saying tons I didn't mean that much. But I do prolly have like 30 to 35 gallons. It says 10W-30, Straight 30, 5W-30. I just didn't know if there's a oil better for it or not. Thanks for the reply guys!
Reply:The Amsoil 10W30 small engine oil should do fine in your Kohler engine, since it is labeled as a small engine oil, after all.
Reply:On page 4 for the KOHLER Command series, it shows oil specs. It also said to use detergent oil. I guess non detergent would work but detergent and synthetic (AMSOIL) are recomended .I couldnt upload the KOHLER manual (exceeds KBytes) but it is a free download.
Reply:Just get some Mobil one 10-30.. It will do anything you need, and it's cheap at Wally world.. I would recommend Motul 300v, but no real need for double Ester top shelf oil.. I had a 305g, and Kohler. Not picky at all.. Clean, quality oil semi-syn would be just fine too... Something (Don't laugh) like Motorcraft 10-30 is and is quality oil too..http://www.docs.citgo.com/msds_pi/10002.pdf The Rotella diesel oil in the right weight would be a good pick too..Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i
Reply:BrandX, the OP has a TON of ROTELLA and AMSOIL. I think the AMSOIL is a better choice for gas engine.  I can get ROTELLA at Wallymart but AMSOIL has to come from a dealer in these parts and is considered a quality oil and costs more. What Im wondering is why do you guys use non detergent in a broken in gas engine? Wouldnt this be bad for a gas engine? May be for breaking in
Reply:Maybe so, but diesel oil in some motorcycles really come back with good oil tests.. It's a much tougher environment with all the gears shearing the oil, then a straight air cooled gas motor. Not really all that much to worry about, in the engine other then getting quality oil in the right weight.. Huge # of options, that will be just fine.. I would not run non-detergent in a broken in motor. I would run detergent Diesel oil in most gas motors, but not with a Cat on them.. The high zinc/etc motorcycle oils will be a good pick for that engine too..     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shell_Rotella_TEsab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i

Reply:Amsoil would be the best. That's what I run in my 20 some hp Kohler on my Ranger.Imagine taking 2-3 days to decide what oil to run.... Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:Mobil one, Redline, Motul, etc.. also are the best. Probably be shocked just how good the Semi-syn. stuff is for long engine life..http://www.redlineoil.com/Products.aspx?pcid=13Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i
Reply:I wasnt aware of detergent diesel oil. I like RedLine. Its easier to get than AMSOIL.  I would just use the AMSOIL in a KOHLER but only if I had a ton of it .

Reply:I run Mobil one 10w 30 in my 305g I change it every 100 hours so I'm not spending the extra money for synthetic. I have had kohlers with 4000 to 5k on them that have had regular 10w 30 in them. If you change it regularly the machine will be worn out before the engine.Sent from my C811 4G using TapatalkLast edited by Gmmandan; 09-27-2015 at 07:06 AM.Vantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:5000 hrs is about max life expectancy for a gas engine. If you get more life than that out of a gas engine, your taking real good care of it and it's a bonus. A well looked after diesel motor on the other hand can average 10 000 hours.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
