I had a great day at the flea market. I picked up three auto drills with 1/4" jacob chucks for $100. I couldn't pass them up at this price! The guy said they all came off the same machine so they should be matched. I also picked up a Tapmatic 90x for $200 I cannot find any model numbers or manufacturer name. I suspect the sticker was gone long ago.I measured the free running rpm at between 4500 and 5000 rpm One ran at 4500, another at 4800, and yet another at 5000 rpm. I suspect once they are oiled up they will all come in around 5000 rpm.I figured out how to adjust the feed rate but there are some other adjustments that I'm not sure of their purpose. Also one of the ports looks like a grease fitting Photo one shows the three drills. Photo two I'm not sure what the 1,2,3 Selector does (only feeds in position 1). Not sure what the adjustment screw is for. Not sure what the square plug is for or covers. I believe the cover is the on/off valve access cover.Photo three shows the feed adjustment screw. Not sure about the grease style fitting.Photo four shows the Tapmatic 90x Maybe someone can shed some light on these drills. Attached Images
Reply:i dont know any brand or anything, looks like the type of drill that would be used on a production machining table..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:might try Autodrill  also the ones we were using had air to the feed solenoid, also air coming into the rear powering the drill seems like there was also a feed pressure along with the feedrate setting.. you just brought back bad young adult memories, me and a maintenance guy had to completely rebuild a 12 station rotary machining table when i was fresh out of high school... took us several months to machine all the nests and set up new drilling, tapping, facing and spotfacing stations.. all for machining a faucet handle, that thing ran like a bat out of hell though.. was cool to watch it.. sucked setting it up though..Last edited by brucer; 09-06-2011 at 12:54 AM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:we used to have the top ones set in 4s on drilling rig at plastics firm where i worked.if like ours they have 3 speeds for the different types of plastic we drilled.

Reply:My guess was correct, they are ARO! I removed the mount on the drill and discovered the model number underneath The ARO Equipment Corp.Byran, Ohio USAModel PO-50-2A Serial 4137H63RPM 5000Now to find a manual...
Reply:Originally Posted by forhireIn the past I've received quotes from Autodrill... $$$$. They don't appear to be Autodrill or BlackAlloy models. They might be old ARO (now IR) units... but most of them have numbers stamped into them. I'm going to pull the mount off and see if there are numbers hiding under there.I'll have to play with the 1,2,3 selector some more today and see what happens.I was hoping to mount one on my cnc plasma table to make start holes in 1 inch plate but at the rpm they run... I doubt it will happen.
Reply:What are YOU going to use them for ?   Or can you just not pass up a mechanical bargain ?    LOLWeldandpower Lincoln 225 AC,DC with Briggs 16hp gas engine.WW2 era Miller TIG.
Reply:Originally Posted by brucermight try like 1/4" or 5/16" carbide drill and peck it about every .020 or use a carbide spotdrill to centerdrill about .050 deep..  thats a good idea hooking one up to a cnc plasma/router if the machine has enough mass it should work...
Reply:how thick material are you planning on drilling?if your going to try it, look at Garr coated drills ,Garr calls it Hardlube i think.. we also used alot of coated  4 flute drills, 2 of the flutes were center cutting drill point and the other 2 flutes were for chipload reduction..  dont spotdrill or centerdrill, the carbide drills are self centering.. we generally ran about 3000rpm and a feed of 5 or 6ipm with flood coolant, we were in heat treated tool steel also, so mild steel should be fairly easy.. straight compressed air should work for cooling while drilling carbon steel. you might be running a tad fast on rpms but if your getting through it fast enough i think you would be ok..  the problem you may end up with is the cutting edge chipping because your machine isnt rigid enough (chatter), i dont know your machine...Last edited by brucer; 09-06-2011 at 05:01 PM.tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/

Reply:i wouldnt tap at 1500rpm in a drill press or manual mill... only time i tap that fast is rigid tapping in a cnc in aluminum with a coated 3/16 cnc tap.. the tapping head i ran was a self reversing.... can you drill with the z axis of your cnc machine?  you should be able to using a canned cycle if your controller uses/accepts canned cycles..tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
