I need to do a repair outside on my tractor.  Steel is around 3/16 thick to the eye.  I was told that a dual shielded flux core wire that ran with CO2 shielding would be best, but I'm having a tough time finding one.  I don't understand the nomenclature of shielded mig wire.  I see that most are E71xxxx, but I don't understand what the X's mean. I have an XMT304 tha I'm running a suitcase off of.  I'm setup for .023-.045 wire.  I have both C25 and straight CO2, but I'd prefer to run off of CO2.Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks
Reply:Why do you want to go with dual shield for welding outside? Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:What I was told.  I was thinking Lincoln 71M?I'm prepared to put up wind guards.  If this is a bad idea all around, I'm just gonna go 6011 route and 7018 cap.  It's for a repair where the horizontal top tube of my Ford 801 frontloader cracked off the vertical main beam.  The frame acts as the oil reservoir for the hydro system.  I want to get the least amount of metal grindings into the frame.  Will post pics soon.
Reply:If it's a lot of welding I'd go with .045” Innershield before dual shield. But if it's not much welding I'd use SMAW.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:@ Drf255 - you've ruled out stick'n her with 7018?  No prob.  Check out http://www.lincolnelectric.com/en-us...ncolnElectric).  The "Elite" spec is probably overkill for your app, as the wire is spec'd for seismic (D1.8), but she's GTG for All Positions with with 100% CO2 or C25 shielding.  Related, the Outershield 71 "M" is GTG w/ 100 CO2 and all positions EXCEPT Vert Down. Note, most dual shield wires stocked at your LWS start at .045, but you can order .035 variants.  Recommend you run .045 as a baseline. Here, we run .045 ESAB 710X-M and she's pro bro.  Remember to set your flow rate to 40CFH and standby for the heat output.  PM me if you have any questions on your app."Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:Since you say it is also oil reservoir I would stick weld it .  Also keep in mind Evan hyd oil will flash or go boom if situation is rite what is your plan to prevent this
Reply:We have run over 100 tons of 71M Elite in .045 & 1/16 co2 for the World Trade Center that should be the answer .

Reply:If you run Esab X wire. it will tend to suck up moisture about as bad as any wire made. Esab has 14 pound spools available. It is one of the best dual-shields(easiest) for running vertical beads using Co2.Esab/Lorch ET-220iEsab 160i caddyThermal LM-200 Lincoln feedersThermal Pee-Wee 85sThermal 60i- 3phase /RPC powered (Beast)Thermal Drag-gun 35CINE 1500 Klutch 140i

Reply:@ BrandX - your comment directed at the wire's hygroscopic (water-suck'n) nature?  A new roll, gifted to me by an ESAB contact, in Dec'13 has been stored in the open in the shop.  No problems with the wire's performance to date.  Perhaps increases in humidity summer will alter it's performance.  @ kd11 - bro, have a NIB {unopened} roll of .045 Lincoln 71M.  Awaiting an opportunity to test drive the product.  Heard she runs awesome.  But know this.  The ESAB 710X-M dual-shield lays up, down, and around w/ C25 shielding like a boss.  Below images are the first-runs with the .045m "X" wire using C25 from a few months back.  You should try a roll of "X"  Attached ImagesLast edited by ManoKai; 05-25-2014 at 12:38 PM.Reason: ~ eats, shoots, and leaves ~"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
