Won an auction and picked up the belt sander / disc sander, only to find out the drive roller was now missing.  Checked with Grainger and it is discontinued and no one knows how to get one.  Any thoughts on a suitable replacement or where i can get one?
Reply:That prob would be an easy fab job if you knew what size and how it looked...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun

Reply:The Wilton I have in the shop has smooth top and bottom rolls, once you crank the belt up it ain't gonna slip.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:is this the dayton grinder that will take both 1"x42" and 2"x42" belts? I have one at work, if this is the one I can try to take a photo if you like.
Reply:Again I love this site.  I was thinking will have to get a piece of stock machined and BAM cap a piece of pipe.  Sometimes the simplest solutions....On road so no pic will post when done.  Thanks for all the help as usual.
Reply:Here are two pics of the machine Attached Images
Reply:Thats even easier because no bearings are required. Looks like a 4" wide roll with a hole drilled in it to fit your shaft and a couple of set screws. Now if i had the shaft piece of cake...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:if only i wasnt some hack that just thinks he can metal fabricate .....   oh wait i am!!!!anyone with suggestions on where to get some pipe and endcaps to weld on?  was thinking local plumbing shop...
Reply:Solid round bar would be your best bet. Drilled in a lathe so it runs true. Can you measure the shaft dia and lenght and the dia of the other roller...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:Why not make your pulley from hard wood? See this homemade machine with wood pulleys. http://woodgears.ca/sander/neal.html You could even turn it in place on the machine.
Reply:ok to be completely honest, whenever i see the avatar of for hire, jack olsen, boostinjdm, oxy moron or some guy with duane something, then i really pay attention.  i always enjoy the tips from these guys and several others.  its like having free teachers.  these guys are the reason i picked a picture of the worst welding job on google as my avatar so as never being confused as someone who knows what they are talking about.why didnt i make mine from hardwood forhire?  well its becuase i simply hadnt thought about it.  while your idea was simple, cheap and effective, i was looking for a much more difficult route that would take me spending more time and money!!!!i started looking into spending WAY TOO MUCH MONEY for a solution when i could have just made a much simpler solution.  will look at that tomorrow out of scrap i have laying around.  thanks!!there should be a mastercard commercial about this site that says something about ignorance being priceless.  great idea.... thanks again.
Reply:Another idea... which might hold up even better... would be to cut a bunch of circles from good plywood using a hole saw. Drill the center to match your shaft. In the center disc drill for a round nut and cross drill for the set screw. Glue and bolt all the disks together. I made a quick rendering that might help you see what I'm talking about.Of course... I'd likely just take a chunk of old baseball bat and make it one piece.  Attached Images
