Wanted to put more stuff on the back of my quad... i know it's not a utility quad, but i figured i could use it for at least carrying a bit of extra stuff along the trail.I am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP

Reply:Great looking rack.  I built one similar back in the late 80s for our 4 wheeler.  I was very proud of my new rack until I broke the Honda rack off that I had bolted the new rack to.   I think I overloaded it and hauled it on rough roads with a tree stand strapped to it.  I had too much cantilever and my original rack wouldn't take the leverage.  Good luck and congrats on your new project.
Reply:Nice job.   Remember that it's quite a lever arm on the area it's bolted to.  I'd try to add a diagonal piece from the rear of the rack to some area below if possible.
Reply:Welcome to the forum. Read my sig line, I am only qualified to weld scraps :-) Nice project, have fun, read lots, learn lots. The guys here are awesome... they do some real purdee work.... Anyway, welcome to the forum!!Qualified & experienced at welding scrap metal
Reply:Its gonna break the subframe. I had to fix one last year and it looks like the same bike.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Welcome, looking at the first three pictures, the "CHEIF" flipped his truck, probably took the turn too fast.  Best  bob
Reply:rhunt, he was a few beers into the weld.weldermike,  It could break the sub frame, but only if i'm riding it hard and a lot of weight. a 20 lb cooler or a basket of towels isn't going to be noticed by the quad.I am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP
Reply:your missing the point.  you just added alot of leverage to the rear frame.  that 20lbs will act more like 40.handler 187hobart air-force 625one old azz lincon cracker box
Reply:Its a cool rack, and I applaud you for a job well done. And no doubt the quad wont think twice about 20 lbs. But you have to remember when you place a weight further from an objects fulcrum, its acting force becomes greater. I can sit on those subframe grab barsall day, but if I sat on the end of the extension rack, Id snap it right off. I would add an extra cross brace or two, like suggested. Otherwise, it looks gokd. Get that hood timeup!
Reply:Just get you a fat friend to sit on the front as counter weight.Nice rack, good first build.
Reply:I agree with weldermike and poisonedbrew. Too much stress on frame. Your machine maybe too light for a rack . I would check with manufacture options if you have not already. If they sell one duplicate their mounting system and follow weight limits.

Reply:Sheesh, some of you guy's are acting like i'm going to try hauling a 300 pound bear out of the woods with this thing!... if i were doing that, i'd get a utility quad.I wouldn't put even enough weight on this thing to pin the suspension... which would be some where in the neighborhood of 80 lbs on the tip of the rack. They do have rack options similar to this one, just not as wide or not designed for a cooler (had built in bins), the only one i found which had a raised edge but was to narrow was $800... i wasn't about to purchase it, and given the equipment and material i purchased, it's still cheaper than buying that rack AND i get to try to learning a new skill.I am a new guy, please don't be to harsh.Welding Equipment so far:First Welder: Blue Hawk Flux-MIG 100 (no tanks, so only Flux for me right now)Second Welder: Miller MillerMatic 211 Auto-Set with MVP
Reply:ok, I'll start  with qualifications. Welding for 15+ years at this point. I'm also an active ATV enthusiast. that being said, what is the rack going to be used for? just a cooler? that's all that's ever going to be on it? a cooler can get pretty heavy in my experience. but lets say it sticks to your 20 lbs. that's 20 lbs hanging behind the rear axle. what does that mean? well for all intents and purposes that's 20 lbs less weight on the front of the wheeler. This effects, steering, Braking, acceleration, and adds more weight to the frame. but because it's cantilevered it acts like more weight than it actually is. can the frame hold the weight? sure. but for how long? Metal fatigues over time through vibration, and bouncing. Both of these equate to flexing at frame joints. which eventually lead to cracking. The further out you have the load the more movement it gets. which equates to more inertia or more force. basically multiplying the forces added to your frame. I'm not saying it's a bad build, or that it's not useful. I'm saying you're adding added stress to the machine that you don't need to. If there were my machine. I would have lifted the rack up, and had it go over the seat some. This brings the weight forward more over the rear axle which helps with the ride, and it also helps eliminate some of the force you're imparting on the frame from the load. Basically reducing the force multiplier. One of the things you'll find on this forum is that there are thousands of ways to do things. But only a few are "right" and that is depending on who looks at your post. you build looks decent. Would I have done it that way? No. but then again, it's not my build. but at the same time, you've posted a build and design up for opinion. Don't get upset if people more experienced than you don't like your design. they don't like it based on experience. something that you currently don't have. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:I'll throw in my 2 cents here... NICELY DONE SIR! I say run it for everything she's got and hold on!True the rear sections on most atv's aren't the most heavy duty but I see much more stress than that rack put on them all the time (I own a motorcycle shop, also do almost all other power sports too). And even if something dose tweak or break, it will give you an excuse to break out the welder and beef her up!!Just my opinion..Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
Reply:If limited to 50 pounds you'll be fine
