Need a little help here.Picked up a 211 a couple years ago. laid a few decent beads when i first got it. This was on 220v and autoset.I have recently picked it up again. laid down some beads tonight for the first time and they look like crap and completely different than the above. 220v, 3/16" steal, played with all kinds of settings (autoset on the upper/lower settings, manual on the higher/lower end). gas flow between 15-25 cfm.any help here? why do the welds look completely different? i thought the pitting was due to not enough gas flow, but i played with the flow rates and still got the same results. now, the cfm gauge was acting a little funny, but it settled when i was varying the rates between 15-25.what do y'all think:not enough gasincorrect settings???im at a loss here and really want to start laying metal. i have some 16" pipe that is begging to be made into a reverse flow smoker!! thanks for any help.
Reply:That looks a lot like no shielding gas.  I'm guessing you brushed all the brown crud off before the pic?Check the gun connection at the machine.  If it is not pushed all the way in, the shielding gas will leak out right there and not get to the gun end.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:It's a shielding gas problem....-Pull the nozzle and check the little gas holes on torch tip clean of splatter-Yes, also make certain lead is plugged in tight to drive assembly, but also pull out and check O rings.-Absolutely no breeze or fan or fume extractor runningI had this problem recently and it turned out my ball float regulator was going goofy. Replaced it with original Hobart dial gage regulator and problem solved.Oh, and as a habit, always flip switch to spoolgun and pull trigger for about 1 second per foot of torch lead and use that opportunity to adjust flowing gas CFH at regulator and purge hose. Then flip switch back and weld.Last edited by wornoutoldwelder; 10-11-2015 at 01:35 AM.
Reply:right on, thanks for the quick replies and help guys! you were correct, the gun lead was not all the way inserted, so no gas was traveling to the gun. will fire it up tomorrow and see if it looks like the top pic!
