weld bend coupon

Obviously a fail.... handed to me.... could have been expulsion.  I didn't push it.  No further comment from me but a lesson for people taking welding courses.

Reply:One has to look at the failure and then imagine how the failure was created.
Reply:Couple years ago I was trying to teach a kid how to weld. He wasn't doing too bad on flat. He got to thinking he was all that, and wanted to try vertical up with 7018. Reply:CEP , Notice the direction of the failure........ inline with the direction of the weld which is typical as in your sample indicating poor tie ins on the sides.  Now look at the pattern on the bend coupon I posted.  Note the type of failure and the direction.
Reply:I still haven't figured out what went wrong with the coupon you posted. It must be a face bend coupon, but I can't figure out what is wrong. It looks more like scuffs in the metal, more than a failure. Reply:I see a few evenly space cracks/splits.  It looks like they welded with the grain, not across it, causing the base metal to split at the major grain boundaries when bent.  Not something that happens too often, but can affect the test.
Reply:You guys have to think out of the box. LOL. The tear is indicative of what happens with an arc track. Only notice that the so called track travels way past the margins of the weld bead.  Someone fixed something before handing it to me to bend test.  Like Axis said not happens too often.  When pigs flly!!!!
Reply:Root or face bend ?   I once upon a time had small cracks in a bend test similar to that,  it was for school too (my first block).  Gouged the backing strap off with carbon arc and got a bunch of tiny cracks that opened up when the piece was bent.    And no I wasn't after cheating and trying to fix something.   It was back to 08 so I cannot remember every detail,  all I know is I started gouging off my backing straps with a torch after and never had another issueJourneyman / Red Seal Welder (What a useless test)Miller CST 280Miller XMT 350Miller 12vs XtremeEvolution Evo 28 mag drillEvolution 380 Dry Cut saw
