Anyone know what kind of contaminants would cause a slick that starts out red when it's hot but then dries to a brownish color? It wasn't blood- I checked and I wasn't bleeding at any point yesterday. In case you're wondering, I was doing TIG on mild steel with a 70x filler rod, 100% argon at roughly 25 CFH.Currently working as a Paralegal, but still interested in hobby welding.Miller Bobcat 225ntOne- Character Fractions: ¼ ½ ¾ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞
Reply:Got any pictures? Sounds like tungsten contamination if it is a brown area around the edges of the weld. 25cfh is a probably too high if you are using a #6 or 7 cup.Sent from my S4 using Tapatalk1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:Depending on which 70 class filler it aounds like silicon slag. Er70S-2 and -3 both contain a fair amount of it as a deoxidiser which can leave a dark brown glass like slag on the weld, mostly on the toes.25 cfh doesnt sound excessive, i often weld with 40-50 cfh with an 8 or 10 cup, but for welding indoors with no draft its more then you needLast edited by ttoks; 10-17-2015 at 02:33 AM.

Reply:Ok, bit of an update. We were using a very large gas lens and a 10 cup, and the contaminant puddle was at the end of the weld and not at the edges. You're right, though, it could be silicon/silicum (my reference book calls it the latter) slag. I just don't have a mass spec to analyze it.Currently working as a Paralegal, but still interested in hobby welding.Miller Bobcat 225ntOne- Character Fractions: ¼ ½ ¾ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞
Reply:A picture would go a long way if you have one.MIG welding with er70s-6 i get a lot of silicon slag, but TIG welding with er70s-2 I have never seen anything like what you are describing.Sent from my S4 using TapatalkLast edited by njs552; 10-17-2015 at 01:37 PM.1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
