I'm welding practice coupons using 3/16 x 2 x 6 steel. I'm interested to see what others' machine settings are for uphill and downhill. (I'm using a miller machine)  what wire speed/ voltage are you guys using out there? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Spray transfer requires higher voltages. Due to the heat of the process its generally only recommended for flat and horizontal positions. To run vertical up with spray, your going to have your hands full.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:This is where pulse spray is beneficial from my understanding.  3/16 seems a bit thin for spray.Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250

Reply:Usually I'm doing 1/8" plate at the tech school and run 17.5 to 19.5 on the voltage, 175 to 225 roughly on the wire speed using .035 wire and 92/8 Argon Co2 vertical up. We never bother with vertical down as it's a poor way to weld structural material. It's basically used to weld sheet metal where you want limited penetration. Usually when I see guys run vertical down it's because they can't weld, and it makes a "pretty" bead, even if penetration sucks. The big question is can you read the puddle? I have no problem running higher voltages with a runnier puddle because I can read the puddle and have the experience to handle it. Students usually can't and we need to turn down the machine some..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:There's an app for that.   Both miller and Lincoln have a setting app. ESAB does too i thinkTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
