Hey there fellas. I need some help here with some questions about my sa200. It is a 1969-70 redface.  Seeing as this is my first one to repair I feel like I am doing well so far but could use some guidance. My first question is about the oil bath air cleaner. Do I need to try and change out the filter? Can you even change the filter material out? If so How?Second would be the outlet on the front of the machine. The guy I got it from must have removed it and I’m trying to figure out what to replace it with and how to wire it into the machine.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Reply:Welcome to the forum.Oil bath air cleaner.I don't think that the stuff in the middle of the filter needs to be changed.  I imagine that it could be removed one way or another, they had to stuff it in there when they built it.  If you are worried about it you can probably give it a soaking and sloshing in parts cleaning solvent, gasoline whatever you feel safe with.  I believe that its purpose is more of a splash guard than anything.  When the air bubbles up through the oil it may be doing some splashing about and the fibers/filter stuff keep the oil droplets from being sucked into the carb..  I have never bothered with it but then again I may be an idiot.I think that it is most important to clean any accumulated dirt, and dust (mud in the bottom) out of the bowl, and fill it to the proper level with clean oil.As far as the outlet,It is just a normal looking receptacle just a single instead of the double ones in your house.I will do some looking to see how it is wired, I may be able to help.Last edited by Mack; 12-14-2008 at 01:27 AM.Mack
Reply:Well I cracked open the oil plug to drain the oil and it had anti freeze in with the oil.!!!Not sure what to do now any suggestions?
Reply:Need to do a pressure test from the radiator to see if it holds pressure. Sounds like you probably have a blown head gasket or worst case a cracked head or block.
Reply:I don't know a thing about your welder, but the oilbath aircleaner is the best type of aircleaner there is.  Had one on and old 63 Dodge 225.  The carb never had crap in it.  Can't say that about the paper filters.Like Mack said.....  I used to fill the fiber part with gasoline once a hear, then dump it, then left it sit for about a half day to let the vapors evaporate.  Never had trouble with it.I hope the water in the oil is only a bad head gasket.  Hope it all turns out well"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Yeah,Don't get too upset.  More than likely all is wrong is a head gasket.  It is not UNcommon to blow one on a red seal.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:That is the weird thing i did a pressure check right after I got the thing and it was great. then I started to take it apart and found the antifreeze. How can it be leaking if it held pressure? One guy I have been talking to said that if there is antifreeze in the oil that my berings will be shot. is this true?
Reply:Easy...Its a flat head.  Really.  But in a more techinical sense, I suspect it was a small hole that did it.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:As far as the bearings,  If the oil and water were mixed, I'd say there's a fair chance it needs a freshening up.  If not, the leak developed through a period of sitting.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:HI my name is epps and im trying to rebuild and old sa 200 and does anybody know a way i can find out exactly what year model i have so i can get the engine rebuilt
Reply:Just clean the mesh in your oil bath filter, solavent, gas, soap and water, doesn't matter, long as you get the sludge out - and blow it dry.  It NEVER needs to be changed. Thats how we did it in the good ol days.Oil in water - Does this unit have an oil cooler? you see where this is headed.I know for a fact that antifreeze will destroy the bearings in a Detroit  Diesel.  I dont know what your brgs are made of.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug
