Today i practiced combo pipe. I used an xmt 304 and put the root on scratch start. I switched my leads back to electrode positive and filled and capped with 7018. it looked like junk. I forgot to switch the machine back to stick. The rod burned but was not smooth at all. This got me wondering what exactly is the difference in the machine between the two settings? Scratch start vs smaw.
