Some metal debris from drilling got into the motor vents on my Dewalt cordless drill. It made a little noise and sounded like it got stuck to the motor magnets somehow then the noise stopped.Should I be concerned and look to open it up and try to remove them ?thx,LMM 180

Reply:Assuming it's made to come apart and you know how to do it properly, checking can't hurt whereas leaving junk inside might. Heck, I've taken things apart just to see how well they're made.
Reply:I would definitely open it up and clean it. Just one word of warning - give whatever electronics contact cleaner you use PLENTY of time to evaporate and otherwise dissipate no matter how non-flammable it says it is! And of course do this with the battery removed. How do I know? Well, it was a Dewalt 18 volt that my husband has. He noticed the motor was sparking and it just smelled like it was hot. Rather than let it burn up he took it apart one night in the living room and cleaned it up. He let it sit for a good 15 minutes, we both thought the cleaner was dry, and everything was good until it sparked again as he released the trigger on the first test. Thankfully the housing was still off and the cleaner burnt off VERY quickly, along with some of his right eyebrow and hair, but the plastic didn't burn. No major damage, his hair grew back and oh yes the drill works really well still. It is one of the first 18 volts, at least 11 years old, and that was about 4 years ago that my husband cleaned it.The family toys:Miller Maxstar 150 S, with TIGGoWeld baby wirefeedOxy/Acetylene rig
Reply:They're pretty simple. I usually just use a blow gun stuck in the vents while running to clear 'em out. I believe the sparking when you let off the trigger is the electric brake. By the time a motor burns up, it's time for a new drill. I'll spend $15 or $20 to fix one up, but beyond that it's easier to replace. VS triggers and motors are over $50 by themselves. I've only had to throw out 1 dewalt drill in the last 15 years or so. I use mine hard daily. I currently own 3 of them. All different models for different uses.My name's not Jim.... |
