I seem to be having trouble finding fairly heavy chain that is not coated and that can be readily stick welded.  Coated (e.g., zinc) chain on the other hand is all over the place.  Is there a homebrew for uncoating chain, that is, removing the zinc coating to leave a readily weldable metal surface  --  something that won't poison me and the neighbor's dog?  Chain length about 3 feet.          -Marty-
Reply:Why not go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a tow chain?I've made thousands of endless chains over the years to handle wire rope, I always liked using 309 stainless steel rod.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:You could soak the chain in a Muriatic Acid solution to get the plating off.   I recall some good information about doing that in another thread here on the forums in the not to distant past.   You can get a gallon of it at Home Depot.

Reply:Get a bottle of The Works blue toilet bowl cleaner at Wallymart or somewhere.  The regular Works is 20% muriatic acid.  The cheap version from Dollar Tree is 9 1/2%.  Not sure if they still put the Rodine inhibitor in there but I hope so."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Home Deep has zinc plated and galvanized chain. Wouldn't a 6011 (paint and rust tolerant) rod burn right through the galvanizing?
Reply:I would say it depends on the application. The night the LVM bridge sank I had to weld several chains together to hand over hand 10-ton temporary anchors for the 3rd Lake bridge. I don't think any of us wants to stand under a 10-ton anchor that the weld prep was half a$$ed.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:I can buy chain by the foot at TSC Tractor supply, plated, unplated, depending on the grade.
Reply:It's not the rod you have to be concerned with....it's the zinc FUMES!!!!!!  Gotta be careful there.  Search the forum.
Reply:It is easy to remove zinc from galvanized parts. Make up a lye solution deep enough to submerge the parts, and soak the parts. The lye won't touch the steel (unlike muriatic, which if left too long will pit the metal, cause hydrogen embrittlement etc) but will remove the zinc and leave the steel shiny with every speck of rust gone. Rinse with water hot enough to self-dry within 60 seconds.
Reply:What do you guys do with those solutions of lye and muriatic acid when you're finished?
Reply:[1]  Good question.  I live right on the ocean in lobstering territory, and people here are touchy about dumping.  The guys at the transfer station aren't too crazy about being left with this sort of stuff.[2]  What's the verdict on 6011?  Is it in fact likely to blast through the galvanizing on old chain?  I guess trying it is the first pass at the answer.

Reply:you can neutralize the muratic acid with a solution of baking soda and water.  Or lye and water for that matter.  You need to have a large enough container.  You can add powdered baking soda right to the acid solution if you're careful.  There will be a lot of foaming and gas produced.  You don't want to be inside a closed space.  You want to have proper safety gear on.   Or you can mix the baking soda with water till it dissolves and then add this solution to the acid.  This will produce a gentler, slower reaction.  Keep adding base to the acid until no more reaction occurrs.  What you have then is a neutral solution and a bunch of dirt on the bottom of the container.  Dispose of the solution as you see fit.  Let the remnants dry and then dispose of in the trash.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:I MIG welded some galvanized chain some time back too, and was happy with the results. As CEP said- if it's not a life support type of application, do it and be done. Be mindful of the fumes, as someone mentioned, but since you stick weld you've probably already figured out how to stay out of the smoke plume.
Reply:Vinegar is what i use just soak it for a day or two and easy to get rid of i use it all the time to remove the coating off ball bearing for making jingle bellsIf it don't fit, use a bigger hammer, if it breaks it needed to be replaced anyhow.

Reply:You're in Owls Head Maine! Look around you, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting an uncoated chain!
