Milwaukee Hole Shooter

I have a Milwaukee Hole Shooter with a right angle attachment that's one of the US made ones and it has served me well for over 15 years of frequent use drilling studs for house wiring. Finally last week it busted, and after looking at the new ones made in China and selling for $249 plus tax I took mine apart and discovered all that was wrong was the woodruff key that holds the spindle gear to the spindle had broken.The spindle gear just lifted off and part of the key is in it, but I can't figure out how to remove the spindle. Do I have to remove the outer nut or is there a retaining ring? My US made one says 4.5 Amps on the nameplate, I noticed the Chinese ones say 7 Amps. What's up with that? Have the rating specs been changed? Reply:The more I look at it it is obvious the spindle nut has to come off to remove the spindle. Since the key is broken the only way I have to hold the spindle is with vise grips. Reply:Their skill saws took a big dump in the last few years, We have probably close to 30 saws in use and the older ones are still working like new provided the guys dont wreck by throwing them around, Half the ones we bought in the last 5 years have died and the rest have had problems
Reply:If you go to the Milwaukee site, you can download the parts breakdown if you need it.As for holding the shaft, put some thick soft plastic or a lead sheet under the jaws to avoid damaging the shaft;  I assume you already know this, but....

Reply:Well there is no way that spindle nut is coming off. I tried the impact, I tried reverse, it does not come off. Then I noticed the keeper was split, allowing the spindle to come out from th efront with the nut on it.Then I looked at the parts diagram online and they show the spindle with the nut attached. So I ordered a spindle, a couple woodruff keys and a spindle gear. Reply:My parts came today and I put it all together. The spindle nut is part of the spindle and is not threaded on, so I pressed the bearing onto it and put it into the gearbox from the front, installed the retaining ring then pressed the new gear along with the new woodruff key onto the backside. Packed it with new genuine Milwaukee grease and she's good as new. Sure is nice to fix a good quality tool instead of just replacing a throwaway Chinese one.
