My wife bought me a new welding helmet as a birthday present and it arrived today. I was using a Jackson SmartTIGGER w-40 with Baldur technology before. I have to say this new helmet absolutely blew me away with how much clearer it is than the Jackson. It is even clearer than my fixed shade hoods. I was stunned. The one thing I noticed is that I can turn the CSV to a darker shade than I was using on the Jackson and still see better. On the Jackson I was running between a shade 9 and 10. On the CSV I ultimately settled for shade 11 after starting off with a shade 9. The most amazing part is how much better I can see the area around the weld bead. Makes me wonder if it is just that good or if there was something wrong with my Jackson?  Can't wait to try it with the MIG and TIG welders.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:I can concur with your review of this helmet.  I bought one a month or so ago and feel that it is a very good deal for the money.  I have only used it for stick to date, but seeing the difference with stick, I am sure MIG results will be just as good.
Reply:wow..I really like this hood. I think it is a toss up for TIG welding. I kind of like the blue color of the Jackson a little bit better for TIG but the HTP helmet is noticeably clearer. For MIG, it is the HTP hands down. Same for stick.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:Sorry Dan, I didn't reply with a report/review because I still haven't done anything with it except stick.  I got into a stick mode (lots of everything being done outside in VERY windy conditions) and kind of left MIG on the back burner. Ha!  I will say that I am very impressed with the clarity so far.  I was happy to have your review from a few years ago.  When I can, I will give a better review with my complete thoughts.

Reply:I have one and it rocks. I wouldn't say going down to only shade #9 is a "flaw", just wasn't designed to go lower.  Its only a $160 helmet after all.  Definitely a very nice clear lens. Pretty much as good as my Optrel e680/684.  But not as good.Last edited by Oscar; 11-06-2015 at 09:34 PM. 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! Reply:Thanks for the video and pictures! That’s a really good looking head gear. Boy I just don’t know, I’m the kind of guy who can break a cannon ball much less a fancy hood like that! Might as well stick with the old school hoods.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:you can make standard covers work pretty easily according to Dan. May not be superior to any other hood on the market, but I have no regrets buying it. I am honestly astounded at the clarity. So much better than my Jackson which I was not expecting. I do kind of wish I knew that you can get this exact hood for $109 (vs $159) from Amazon, but honestly, HTP has been so good with me on other stuff, in retrospect, I don't mind flipping the extra $50 to get their outstanding customer service behind this hood.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:And Lanse was right to criticize the ratcheting action of the head gear. The headgear seems to be a knockoff of the Jackson 370 headgear in a lot of ways. it is pretty good, except I can for sure see some people not living with the ratcheting feature. I may swap out the headgear from another hood...not sure.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:The $109 Crystal Clear lens/helmet I am seeing from Amazon doesn't  look like it has the same lens cartridge in it as the CSV.  Instead it looks like it has the same cartridge in it as the Striker Stealth WG that HTP sells for $119.Obviously I was typing the above reply while the link to the $109 hood was being added to the thread.Last edited by Dan; 11-07-2015 at 02:10 PM.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice

The link I posted looks almost identical to the hood I received.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:I have one and though it's a decent helmet it's not my favorite. I don't like the headgear at all, the helmet shell developed cracks in it, maybe it's the paint they used? My Jackson NexGen is my favorite, of course there is a big price difference. You can go to Lowes to purchase replacement lenses, they actually are pretty good and last much longer then what HTP sells. I could have swore when I was in Matheson they had a CSV with their branding on it for less.ESAB Rebels 215 and 235, ESAB HELIARC 281i, ESAB ET 301i, Hypertherm 85 and 45XP, Thermal Arc 185, TD 60i, HTP PRO PULSE 300
