I have an aluminum pipe (originally anodized but stripped with Easy Off) from an 80's Porsche and want to add a tab to its side, as in the picture.  I'm using a Diversion 165 TIG machine, and am reasonably good at running a bead and doing but joints on clean flat new aluminum.   Any tips for welding this tab to the pipe? How to best jig it up for welding?  I have no idea what kind of aluminum the pipe is made from, but it's much thinner than the 1/8" aluminum tab I'd like to weld to it.  The aluminum of the pipe seems more porous...  Any advice?
Reply:if it were me and I had only one shot at it, I'd make damn sure the pipe was a heck of a lot cleaner than that 1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig! HTP Invertig 400HTP Invertig 221HTP ProPulse 300HTP ProPulse 200 x2HTP ProPulse 220MTSHTP Inverarc 200TLP HTP Microcut 875SC

Reply:Use a file to get shiny metal. Make a few cold passes on the pipe and add a little wire to beef it up some by making a pad for the tab to set on..  Then weld your tab on.Two turn tables and a microphone.
Reply:Jig? You don't need a jig. Just as it is, put a tack on there, then tack the other side and start welding.Build a 3rd hand. I did one years ago when I first started welding. It's ugly as crap, and I could build a better one if i wanted, but I still use it all the time. It works great.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Youll want to scrub that with acetone and a stainless brush (as im sure you know) but the "build a base" idea sounds good.
Reply:What you need is an Alu magnet to hold it in place...         I'd give it a good brush with a stainless wheel and tack one end and start welding from the other
