Looking for a decent set of metal drill bits to use ( I mostly build custom motorcycles at home not everyday, and not for a profession)looking for something that is not a small fortune, but I also dont want to keep buying the junk drill bits from Home Depot that always seem to break on me.just not sure where to go get a set or what to look for looking to stay around the $150 area I noticed these they look to be made in the USA from a company that has been around for a while anyone have any experience with them ? http://www.amazon.com/Piece-Brubaker.../dp/B002HAX5F8
Reply:Klien makes a good set right at $150. The bottom 4-5 spots in your holder will always have broken or missing drills, the small ones break, it just happens. I have gone through several versions of best way to deal with this, for a while I bought cobalt bits to replace the small ones, they break also. Best way is to by colbalts when filling the index and buy in quantity, I buy 2-3 ea when I buy 1/8 or 3/16 bits refill the index and avoid going into the index especially when your using a cordless drill project.I have 3 indexes and I know if I went oout and looked I still have empty holes, I do have a drawer with about 1-20 of the smaller bits. When your feeding your cordless bits it doesn't pay to buy colbalts, they break way before they get dull. I reroofed by garage last summer with metal I couldn't seem to buy enough, I was always looking for a bit.
Reply:Check out Enco when they are having a sale...which is most of the time. Their "U.S. brand" bits are the same Triumph bits they charge more for when they call them Triumph in the description. While they may not be the best of the U.S. manufactured bits they are decidely better than the typical big box store fodder.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.

Reply:You might also look around eBay. It has been a few years, but when the east coast machine shops were going under right and left I found an auction for several thousand Nachi drill bits...quality Japanese manufacture...at around $220 with shipping in letter, frational and number sizes. Had to build a drill bit cabinet to hold them. Reply:My machinist friend gets much of his bench stock from Ebay. A drill "set" is mostly a way to get sizes you DON'T need. Bits are consumable so stock up and buy cobalt.
Reply:Buy a Drill Doctor to go with your new bits and you will always have a sharp bit on hand.  I've had a Drill Doctor 750 for about 2 years and have had real good luck with it.  If you follow the directions completely it works well.  Try to take a short cut or fail to follow the directions and the results can be way less than satisfactory.  I would buy one again in a heartbeat.  http://www.drilldoctor.com"The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:Norseman are some of the nicest ones Ive used. Union made in Minnesota and well priced. I use my junky dewalt sets for the hand drills but if Im chucking into the mill or the lathe aka making a hole that counts, its gonna be one of the norsemans

Reply:I know that you don't want to spend a fortune, but I like to but bits off a Mac Tool truck, because they replace the broken ones forever.  You do pay dearly though.Bruce DeLaetHeavy Equipment Mechanic and Welder1948 SA-200 short hood1949 LincWelder 1801963 SA-200 red faceMiller S-32-P

Reply:Contact CryoGal from here. She is a rep for a manufacturer that makes cryo treated drills. I've used them and it's not just marketing hype, they do cut better than even the cobalt bits I've used. I don't know all their specifics but I'd have to say they approach carbide without the brittleness. I haven't really had a chance to punish the bits too much but so far they seem to be wearing very well. Send her a PM and ask her to send you a sample bit to try on the materials you are working with.AlA man is judged by what's between his legs...always ride a good horseMiller DialArc HFLincoln Classic 300DThermal Arc 181iPowermax 45Scotchman Ironworker(2) BridgeportsOkomota Surface GrinderAutoCAD 2010
Reply:I bought a 115 piece set (Screw machine length) from Enco.   I watched the sales carefully, and got the expensive set for $205 or so.  I'm very happy with the purchase.  Yes, there are probably bits I will never use, but the set has given me high quality performance when I needed it.  I've done lots of projects involving tapping in different sizes and these bits make that all easy.  I guess an other alternative is to create your own custom set of bits.. for drilling, tapping to support all the major fastener sizes (at least to match your own set of taps and dies)  When I added up this, it was cheaper to just buy the set intact when the right special came around.  One nice thing about Enco.. they have a very easy way to keep items on your shopping / wish list.  that way, when you see a good special, you can check your wish list to see if anything on there qualifies.  --zip
