I just bought a like new (used) Lincoln 175 tig square wave machine. When I step on the foot pedal my shop lights go out (florescent) and my drop light, florescent also, plugged in, but the switch off, comes on. This is with the pedal just to where the solinoid kicks on. It weld just fine and when I stop the lights come back on. I have no problems with anything else. The wiring is new, by code with the neutrel and ground seperate back to the main. The lights are off the same sub panel but of course different breaker. It doesn't effect the incadesent bulbs at all. Some kind of feedback? The migs run fine, the stick works great also. Got me baffled!Any ideas? Thanks for any information,David

Reply:It is definetly because of the high frequency waves that the tig machine is putting out. The only things that i have heard of to stop this problem is to try setting up a fence with aluminum foil around you. The aluminum foil will soak up the waves and stop them from shutting the lights down. Also, using grounding rods will sometimes help too.

Reply:Does that machine have a switch to control the HF? If so, either put it in 'off' or in 'start' to see what effect that has on the lights. If you still have a problem with the lights after doing that, you might start by opening the machine and looking for any problems there, perhaps a loose connection at one of the power leads?
Reply:The high freq start on my Miller Maxstar 150 will make the shop lights in my shop flicker a bit.  It's most noticable when I have trouble getting an arc to start, and the high frequency keeps firing.  A better ground for your welding table and machine may help.  A faraday cage (the afor mentioned aluminum foil) will also work, but really isn't practical for most folks.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
