I read this ad describing an original "all copper" welder and yet see the same octagon shaped generator that came with aluminum. Am I mistaken or is someone about to be taken?http://cgi.ebay.com/lincoln-sa-200-p...ayphotohosting Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:He is wrong saying it is all copper wound, unless he has HAD it copper wound himself, in which case he would have said so to my way of thinking. Anyway, I sent him a message telling him he was wrong...let's see what he does about it!Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:I can't send messages to EvilBay since I refuse to become a member. Just look but don't bid and I can't get into trouble.Thought something was odd when he says it is original and is copper wound.Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:I figure he probably was unaware, it's not as commonly known as people would have you think. I have welded with many SA 200s and was unaware until very recently how to tell them apart, other than red or black face. And there are many black face that have the round generator, so that is not as telling as I had originally thought. The octagon generator is the give away for sure. The first SA 200 I welded with was '53 & had to be hand cranked. It had thrown a rod, and the mine I worked for just pulled the rod and piston out, put it back together with three cylinders operating. It had a real OBVIOUS miss, but welded like nothing I had ever welded with before. It was my first welding job after a six week course in basic welding, and the machine made me look good! This would have been in the very early '70s.Last edited by gizzardgutz; 03-20-2009 at 01:25 AM.Reason: add some more facts!!!Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:Dear gizzardgutz, gizzard,I got into it with my dad he made me call lincoln this is copper wound welder 1972 was the last year for copper 1973-1991 are aluminum 1992 they went back to copperThis is the reply I got back from this guy! If what he says is true, then even the octagon shaped generator is a fallible way to know if a machine is aluminum or copper wound.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:whoever told you that at lincoln is wrong. In 1972 SA 200's were aluminum wound. The octagon shape is the way to tell if its aluminum.
Reply:Man, to think he got back to you with "Dear gizzardgutz"Blows me away )He didn't happen to give you the serial/code did he?Gordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

Reply:He has ignored my other message regarding code & serial #'s. I also told him whoever he talked to at Lincoln was mistaken. He changed his description to read all copper windings confirmed by Lincoln until '73.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:These machines have been around for about 60 years now. It's like buying a mid 60's chevy pickup, at some point in it's working life someone may have dropped a mid 70's small block in the truck, and maybe a 82 transmission or a rear end out of who knows what year truck. It's no big deal.JTMcC.

Reply:So here's a simple little test.Who has a pre '72 unit (before SN A-683828) and post '72 unit (SN A-707589 and higher)? Check your code# parts list against the unit SN A-693714, code# 7168 being advertised to see if the stator/rotor PNs are the same or different.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:Originally Posted by BNFThat's what i was about to inquire about aswell. I've ran across several SA's that were supposedly rewound with copper, but had the octagononal barrels. Like stated above buyer beware. |
