I finally got a small lathe last spring ,wired it and checked to see if it ran. Today I needed some rollers . So I got some 2" plastic cut to length with the band saw, then put in the lathe and drilled a hole in them.they were plastic and not real tight specs. Seemed to work ok for what I needed. The last photo shows a roller that I was replacing, it's hard to see but the plastic actually cut into the steel rod in places.
Reply:good job, without the lathe this job would have gone elsewhere... UHMW and other high wear polymers if helped by some abrasives can really wear steel badly. Carefull drilling that stuff, it pulls hard on the drill bit sometime, don't ask how i know
Reply:Nice job! That lathe looks like a South Bend heavy 10?
Reply:Looks good. That's a nice little lathe. What are you building with 3 dozen rollers?
Reply:It's not hard to believe, the leather boots I wear when I ride my dirt bike have worn flat spots in the steel frame.
Reply:Snowbird;  I know seems to pull the bit right in. Mold sonic;  it is a south bend they said it had a 9" swing that's about all I know Forhire; they are replacement rollers for a chain conveyer ( for grain ) they carry the chain back .Thanks for the comments
Reply:I see a taper attachment, keyless drill chuck and quick change toolpostAll nice features
Reply:Oooo... I'd love to have a taper attachment for my lathe. How you grind a bit makes a big deal with plastics. A buddy of mine used to do a lot of drilling and turning plastics when he worked for a place that made custom globes. He used to be the one who sharpened all their tooling and he's custom made some bits for my lathe when we had to do some plastic work. ( He comes over and uses my lathe when he needs stuff machined out of plastic since the place closed) I know the angle of the bits are quite different than they are for wood or steel and helps prevent the bits from getting sucked in too fast..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
