Looking at an older welder and I wonder if anyone can identify it from the picture, please? Unfortunately I can't get to the other side for a photo yet? Welder has control dials on the side away from the side in the picture and also has the typical Lincoln round nose, all inside the frame. 4cyl Diesel driven."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:Hobart... 95% sure
Reply:Just my impression ..... Not a Lincoln. Color, if original, indicates Hobart ..... "Diesel driven" implies most likely late 70's or later.
Reply:looks like a old Hobart 300amp, a friend has one, tried to sell it to me, it ain't red LOLthe gorilla that made it hold Ranger 8 15 yrs old SP150 mig 25 yrs old several Victor sets Snap On 130 mig 25 yrs old Lincoln 225 buzz box SA200 F163 78 mdl they all work just added a Idealarc 250/250
Reply:I don't believe it's Lincoln or Hobart. Not sure what it is off-hand. Although the forward slant on the fan guard, and the sharp creases in the hood bend look a little familiarThe separate mounted, coupler-connected, two-bearing generator, makes me suspect that it was not factory "Yankee built" as is. Interesting that the exhaust is plumbed down. Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 04-15-2009 at 03:39 PM.
Reply:Could have been one of those electric motor driven lincoln and some one added the diesel.Sure looks big!David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks for all your replies. I'll try to have a better look at it on Friday. However in searching the web, I've found the following picture which, from memory, is nigh on identical to it.The only piece I could read the other day was the "Special Applications" section on the left dial. Note the pressed meatl type of selector. Were these used before they changed to the cheap looking white plastic type?Lots of welders would have been "assembled" here or in Australia as that's where our Lincolns are made. This one does look a bit "adapted" with the distance between the flywheel and input to the generator."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:How about a closeup picture of that label below the power cable in that last picture? And it appears that oone label says Lincoln?? or is that something you added? The appearance of the unit and those dials seem to indicate a military type itemCo-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.& 2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:I do ...too. It is a Lincoln , a motor generator (originally) -a 400 amp rated gen. No doubt its a lincoln ,the control panel gives it away, as does the name plate on the generator part of it . PURE DC , with the voltage control you can NOT get smoother dc output ,than with a generator such as this one . I welded on many generators identical (w/motors) to this one ,at Mare Island Naval shipyard, during my apprenticeship there , between 1965& 1969 .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:We had a motor generator (electric) just like that where I used to work. It IS a smooth machine. Its got BALLS too.The control panel is identical. They were 3 phase only. David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Compare these photos. I found this on another forum, actually I'm preety sure he's on here too. They look too much alike except ones a reverse image pf the other. It's a Hobart, the exhaust runs to the bottom on Hobarts. My opinion. Reply:Once more, thanks for your responses. I've been and crawled over and around it this morning and will add photos. Please note that the grey control panel was one I said I found on the net, via google.I'll add the photos and include some of the engine, in case anyone can identify it.Mods, I know the engine is OT here but I thought I'd keep it all in one. Please advise if you' like me to move it.Photos follow:Gotta be a Lincoln, hasn't it?Gotta be a Lincoln hasn't it?Injector pump with external flexi drive. It's a Simms pump and the lift pump is marked Made in England. Note the oil filter below on an angle. Could it be an English Ford? The angled oil filterIt's not a ford, it's a FoMoCo. Although it could be a mofo if it won't fire up!"One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:For sure that's a Lincoln SAE control box.The engine looks like what was commonly called a Dagenham. Probably another Ferguson design that Henry's boys clipped when Fergy wasn't looking! Looks like the builder put a bearing support on the motor end of what was a motor-drive, and then coupled it to the engine. That is a super welding generator, and I think the engines were good too. What a match! You're good to go!The workmanship looks neat enough that I wonder if it isn't a factory job. Maybe it was already a power-unit of some sort before the conversion??Somebody had posted the Chevy six/Lincoln hybrid; remember?Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 04-16-2009 at 09:10 PM.
Reply:FoMoCo is a Ford logo, stands for Ford Motor Company. Could be wrong here, but that seems to something I remember? Those are definately Lincoln controls, tho. Reply:Engine on the welder appears similar to a Fordson Super Major.Tractor looks like 1952 -58 (pre Power Major) model.
Reply:It's a pieced together Lincoln. Somebody took a Lincoln SAE Motor Generator and added an engine to it. It's possible that it was placed in a Hobart frame too. |
