Have an AWS certified buddy who told me to start off with hard stuff to weld. IE thin metal, tubing and pipe. I myself like a steep learning curve, so I'm asking whats some of the hardest stuff to TIG?Ive got 1/16th and 3/32? Red and green Tungsten, #5, #6, and #7 cups. Also 1/16th Er70-s2 for mild steel. Eastwood 200DC TIG.After MIGing I like the torch trigger better with the TIG, though I know greater control can be had with the pedal.Essentially I'd like to get TIGing down somewhat before I add in some pedalSo whatcha got for recommendations?(I'm a quick study. Example; after tinkering with cars my whole life, i'm 31, I took my first car, turbo charged it, ecm swapped it and built the harness myself, then rebuilt/built the 700r4 trans in it and now daily drive it running 20psi. All that with no experience in turbos or transmissions. Electronics and auto experience though.)Thanks for reading,WillSent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Reply:Thin wall tubing "T" joint practice is great.Takes a lot more setup than anything else due to notching time, but it is a good skill to practice on.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Sweet, thanks. Gonna stop by the scrap yard and see what kind of thin wall tubing they have to work with.Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Reply:What engine? You got it backwards. It goes easy stuff first then hard stuff unless you wanna try a real 2" 6g test.

Reply:Lets see you just lay down a stringer on 1/8" mild steel tough guy lol. Then post the pic
Reply:Is the 3.4 the one with vortech heads? That's alot of boost. David viszard the salesman engine builder goof says it does nothing to port those heads but you can.

Reply:So like I said, I'm a TIG noob.Messed around with the puddleRight handed, left handed, right handedRunning beadsI assume I'm adding too much filler? I'm trying to treat it like soldering electronics from habit, lol.Critique welcome.Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

Reply:Try adding filler more frequently, and less of it. Reply:When I linked that video, I meant for you to see the speed he was welding at, and the frequency of adding filler. Ignore the 80A he was talking about. Set the machine on 120A, and give it another go. Try and space your ripples tighter. Use a 3/32 tungsten and 1/16 filler.Like this: 1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:Do I need a thicker piece to do this on?I should be pausing to add filler to give me the ripple yes?Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Reply:Yep. Pause to add filler. You still need to tighten up that spacing. Try moving slower and adding filler about once per second. How thick is that piece? 1/8 should be good enough to run quite a few beads. If needed you can dunk it in some water to cool it down. Not a good idea on actual welds, but for practice it will speed things up.1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:I just needed thicker material to get the motion. It clicked.1/4" thick and im up on 150ish. I let the puddle form for a sec then start moving.Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

Reply:There you go! Second one in from the right looks the best. Nice and straight, consistent width and good puddle spacing. Now keep practicing and try joining two pieces together.1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan
Reply:Im gonna fill the rest of that piece up with welds. Im right handed, but am taking the opportunity to teach my left hand TIG too. Bottom right three are left handed. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Reply:Just gotta catch the motion again. Gonna turn the amps up for the other side.Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk

Reply:Try beveling the edges on that thick of plate and do a multipass weld. You should also work on tightening up the puddle spacing. That tube looks pretty good as well. I don't have a much experience on tube welding, but that part in the pic looks like a nice weld. You got a pic of the inside?1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan

Reply:Gonna set up some more scrap. I want to practice butt welding tubing without filler, the ultimate goal here is the stainless turbo headers for my next turbo setup. But thats quite a ways off. Still approx $550 in stainless tubing to buy and I still haven't recovered from buying the welder, LOL.See you all in a few hours and thanks for the pointers and help!Sent from my SCH-I535 using TapatalkLast edited by wchiarizzio; 11-09-2015 at 08:47 AM.Reason: Added to post.
Reply:And in case anyone is wondering, I'm taking the v6 Camaro into the 10's. With 20psi its slightly faster than a Z06 vette from a roll.Fast enough to be asked "What the hell is in that thing?"Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
Reply:That will take really good traction. And 20 psi is alot. Surprised you don't need e98 or 116 mix. Where are you getting you tubing from and and what size?

Reply:I've MIGd my entire 3" exhaust from DP back, SS tube, MS bullets (4). And the DP up to the 3" was my very first welding project with 14ga aluminized steel, 2.5". Also the prior 2.5" DP back exhaust with a Thrush Welded muffler was my first exhaust I welded.Granted all was done with pretty much NO EXPERIENCE with welding, just watching my father a few times. I had enough with waiting for him to weld stuff for me so I turned it on, put the PPE on, picked up the gun, and started welding. DISCLAIMER: My MIG welds look like sh!t, thats not debatable. BUT, the exhaust will fail LONG before the welds will. And it never leaked. My first welds. The first weld on the Vband above was the guy who made the log headers for the turbo setup. Another reason I picked up welding. All wrapped up.A couple pics of the 3"With 3 bulletsAdding the 4th bulletWhen I added the 4th bullet, I also made some removable hangers. 4 bolts and the whole exhaust drops, and the 3" is tucked under the car better than the stock 2.25".Sorry for the crappy pics, I've gone through a few phones throughout the process lol.Sent from my SCH-I535 using TapatalkLast edited by wchiarizzio; 11-13-2015 at 11:17 AM.
