Unleaded gas in older Machines

Would valves and seats need to be replaced in these machines. I think it was 73-76 when they where starting to switch.I am in the market for a SA-200 or 250. I have never owned one but have welded with them and it is time I got one. But everywhere I look people wont 3800 for a machine that has 8000hr. Or 3000 for one with no doors on hood,holes in fuel tank,blown motor.
Reply:People run unleaded gas in all years of sa 200s and it wont hurt them. I add lead additive in with my gas out of habit. From the prices ive seen a good running sa 200 shouldnt cost much, depending on who owns it and the price they want for it. I bought three parts machines for $450 in all and after putting together I now have a good running and welding 1957 Lincoln sa 200. Ive found several machines in my area for around $1000 in good older condition. The guy i bought my parts machines from had a 90s model one on trailer for $3500 in almost new condition. Just keep your eye open and eventually youll come across a good deal. I periodically check ebay for sa 200 parts and such. Reply:Lead additive is a good insurance policy.  Supposedly it keeps the valves from cratering into the head over time.Just be aware that you have to clean your spark plugs more often.  The stuff gunks up plugs pretty regular.  Once you get used to it, it's no big deal."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Old engines (built in the "leaded" era) didn't have tempered & aged valve seats. The lead was added to the gas to help cushion the valves slapping against them.
