Got my new bed bout finished. The poles are 14' to the cap with an 11,000 lb winch. Anything you guys would have done different. Attached ImagesLincoln 305gLincoln 225 tombstone More tools than I can play with at one time
Reply:The tail block should be behind the pole hinges. As it stands it's trying to pull the poles over onto the cab when in use and I bet it doesn't raise poles very well with the winch. That's a mistake that a LOT of people make when building poles.  This thread covers it pretty well.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...ht=winch+poles.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Did it that way because of space available. Got a pipe that goes into the receiver hitch to raise and lower the poles works good. Try and get a pic of that this evenin. Haven't had issues of them trying to pull back to the cab got set back chains on it. Lifted bout 2000 pounds the other day with blocking under the hitch. Thanks for rotating the pics gonna see if I can get that right next timeLincoln 305gLincoln 225 tombstone More tools than I can play with at one time

Reply:Can someone explain what the poles and everything are used for, I have no clue.

Reply:Nice work!
Reply:The support chains should have gone all the way to the top. I've seen several bend right there. (oops, Irish bet me to it)There is no reason to have to use the extra pole to raise and lower your gin poles. If you use a pulley in the bed that is big enough around that the pull of the winch line will be above the pivot point of the poles, then just taking the winch line up will lift the poles. If it ever does fall over then the line will stop the fall of the poles from slamming down on the head ache rack. The whole two chains thing might work but is a pain in the rear to adjust and the hooks can fall off the chain causing problems. I have one chain attached to a piece of winch line that runs through a pulley at the top of my poles and over to the other side of the headache rack. You adjust the chain on the drivers side of the rack and the winch line runs through the pulley to even the poles out, that way making only one adjustment to the poles is necessary. The pivot points of the poles should have been further into the bed. That way you could put a clamp on the winch line while picking up something that needed to be loaded into the bed. When the clamp hit the top pulley and couldn't take any more line up, the poles would move back until the hold down lines stopped it just past center and you could lower stuff down onto the bed.I think instead of having a hanging pulley at the top, you should have a pulley at the end. That way you can lift all the way to the top of the poles. This can be important when lifting stuff in buildings where the head would keep you from having enough height.I am on my third set up now. I've improved every one and I have used this one for 14 years now and I think it is the best one I've ever seen and can see nothing that would make it work any better. It is made up of lots of other peoples ideas and a few of my own. Use the one you built for a while but keep looking at others. You will want to make changes to make it easier to use. Reply:I already have a set of out riggers built for it for heavy stationary lifts. Y'all bring up some very good ideas. I will be changing some of my set up. This is my first set of poles and y'all have shown me some ways to make life a whole lot easier. The winch plate is half inch and there is a piece of 3/8 x 12 flat bar under pole mounts.Lincoln 305gLincoln 225 tombstone More tools than I can play with at one time
Reply:Really... I was expecting an exact field of work or one task its used for. I kinda guessed  that it was a boom...I feel like they are pretty outdated looking for just being a lifting boom. I expected you to say all about how the length had to be exact for a certain type of job...Why not use a Palfinger boom/crane? Then you really get control in positioning things.

Reply:Two big reasons to use poles instead of a crane. One is lifting capability versus weight. You can lift a lot more weight with a set of poles compared to what they weigh compared to a crane. A crane capable of lifting as much as those poles can would weight a good bit and take away from the ability to carry as much other stuff on the truck. The other reason is cost. They cost a fraction of what a crane costs.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:It would be nice to have swing and lift but it's also nice to have the thousands of dollars difference in pric, in my pocket. To be considered also is the weught of a boom versus gin poles. Mine has a 9,000# Pierce winch on it. It will lift about 4,000# to a height of 21' when the poles are extended. A boom that would do that would have to be so heavy that I would need a much larger and more expensive truck that wouldn't fit in many places that I work.
Reply:For ends of the gin poles have you ever though about using the ends from a wrecker  Ernst Holmes can't be all wrong with the design.and the pulley would rotate for some side pulling with out jumping the sheave . check junk yard for a 440 or 480 size wrecker , and there booms were ajusted like Bobs one cable and chain with hook .gxbxc
Reply:Bob,I wish you or Wayne would put together a nice video showing how a gin pole works, plus what all it can do......thanks in advance.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:Hmmm. Good points guys. I guess money is a really big factor. But, I still feel like the ability to lift things into the bed of the truck, and on and off trailers etc. would be nice with a palfinger. Plus, they look like the take lots of space in the back of your trucks. And I am assuming it adds a little bit to the height of your trucks. My uncles F550 has one on the back corner, and it takes up very little space. And the ability to lift things onto the truck is very helpful. Can't go wrong with both choices though. Thanks guys.

Reply:Can't argue with that Irish Fixit. You guys sure know a ton more then I do, and clearly you swear by them. Just watched Darlington Farms gin pole video. Seems like a well engineered system.Having a crane will also make you need lots valves, a pto takeoff, etc etc. More stuff to break. Thanks for your time guys.
Reply:The trucks with the cranes are not to be moved with weight on the boom. I move stuff with mine all the time. It's relatively easy to load stuff on a trailer with out taking the trailer off the truck. Just jack knife the trailer as much as you can with the object to load as close to the back of the truck as you can get it. Pick up the object. get in the truck and straighten out again, lower the object onto the trailer. Very simple, done it a thousand times..
Reply:Well, as they say, Bob, you are a master. Haha, not everyone can do what you can!
Reply:I'm around "gin" trucks everyday (oilfield), so always be careful. I watched this happen a few months back, lol:Home hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!
Reply:That can happen with any type of lifting rig. Looks bad enough. I'm trying to figure out how both trucks ended up the same direction. My best guess is they where both lifting the same load and it shifted to the side pulling both the same direction.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htmOriginally Posted by BobThe trucks with the cranes are not to be moved with weight on the boom. Reply:Yeah, they were lifting the top sup (for a drilling rig) when the truck on the left started sinking in the mud. Both trucks on this side got dumped. The other two gin trucks on the opposite (not pictured because they had to come around and stand these two back up) end only got jerked aroundHome hobbiest:Build all sorts of BBQ pits & smokers (trailer & non)Lincoln 225 Cracker box (antique)O/P torchRedneck tools out the a$$.They get me by!
Reply:I thought that might be the case when I saw how muddy it was by the left truck. They're definitely not made for side pulls.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:Yeah, truck on left slammed against soft muddy ground, the one on right hit hard ground, lol. Luckily, no injuries.
