Reply:Beautiful. I have a piece someone left after Weld-o-Rama2 and have been trying to shape it. It's smaller but it'll do for the small things I'm thinking of doing. When it's finished, I want it to look half that good!! Congrats.
Reply:Do I even want to know why he needs an anvil in what looks like the kitchen? Nice work..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan

Reply:Love the anvil! I just showed my wife the picture of it in the kitchen, she wasn't keen on the idea. LolI do, however, need to find a chunk of Raul road track though. Any idea where to find some in north west Arkansas?Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Reply:If you want to put good sharp edges to the top, it is pretty easy to do. Heat it up to around 450 and build up the edges with 7010 or 110M. Grind close and finish with a belt sander to true it up.

Reply:Dcoffman I bought some at Rogers iron and metal a few years back. I plan on going over there soon to look for some 6'' channel drops. I'll see if they have any. The anvil looks awesome.

Reply:I found a piece of track by putting a "Looking for" ad on Craigslist. I had a phone call within 1 hour. It was exactly what I needed.
Reply:Thanks for the comments, I happened to find a 4 1/2 ft chunk just chillin in on the side of the road. There are a bunch of 20ft sections near the railroad tracks here in the SF Bay Area. With the price of steel being what it is, I'm really surprised they don't sell it for scrap.

Reply:If you want to use it for any kind of forging, you will want the top milled flat. Other than that... looking good!

Reply:So cool! I really want to build one of those for myself.
Reply:My father had a piece of rail that he used as an anvil in his shop way back in the early 70's. He used it for a couple of decades! The business has gone thru several owners since he owned that Massey Ferguson dealership but I think the current owner still has that piece of rail and still uses it! Interestingly enough the current owner of said dealership apprenticed under my father!  Lincoln Ranger8 Hobart Handler 135Hobart Hefty CC/CVIronworkers Local #712

Reply:Not to bust any bubbles, but taking anything from or near RR tracks, that belongs to the RR is a crime.  Even old ties, rail and rail plate lying adjacent to the tracks is a no-no in "their" eyes.   I'm just saying to be careful of the rail road police.   Cool anvil.  I want to make one too!Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member

I'd suggest either a phone call or face-to-face with the Roadmaster or Track Foreman on that section of RR property. Explain what you want to do with the rail and you may even have a length of steel waiting down at the yard for you. It's never been a problem for me, but I work for them. The railroad tends to try to get along with the public when it doesn't cost them anything, or at least chump change, and that is what a chunk of rail would be for them. There losing money every time they have to haul scrap rail down to the recyclers...wages, fuel, time and the rail isn't usually short enough to bring high scrap value when the recycler has to take each section and shear it multiple times. Figure wages for a Speedswing operator, couple of gandies on the hook, one or two for the truck to the scrap yard and it doesn't pay dividends making that run. Community relations are important to the RR...I've talked the local Roadmaster into providing a thermite welding demonstration for the local high school welding class...so spend a little time getting to know them.Lincoln PrecisionTig 275Miller 251Miller DialArc 250Bridgeport millHossfeld bender & diesLogan shaperJet 14 X 40 latheSouth Bend 9" 'C'Hypertherm 900Ellis 3000 band saw21"Royersford ExcelsiorTwo shops, still too many tools.
Reply:The anvil look fabulous .A question though. If you do not have access to Oxy Equipment then any suggestions on cutting it to a shape.I  have a piece of rail track and a mate started to cut it with a cut off saw and the only thing that really happened was the blade was wearing real quick while the would be rail was only slightly cut. Showed me the quality of the rail.

Reply:I was very fortunate to do some work near the maintenance yard of a short haul line and found the yard foreman.  Asked how much it would cost for a 12" piece.  He went with me to the scrap pile and offered me a 36" piece for free.  I cut it in half with my bandsaw and gave half to retired 90 year old Father - In - Law.  Only difficulty I have had with it is I stood it on end to save floor space, and bumped it while cleaning pole barn.  Two broken toes taught me to let it sit like it does on the ties.

Reply:Here is a rail track anvil I built for a friend. It has half of the top left rounded and half was built up and ground square. I built this about 24 years ago and it gets used almost daily as he builds chicken and rabbit feeders on it. It shows very little use. Attached Images

Reply:I think it was me that left that at weldorama!I wish you guys lived closer. I get rail all the time. I have a few pieces sitting in my front yard right now. I am working on the railroad and they are doing bores under the track for culverts. They have some BIG steel casings. I am gonna ask for a cutoff to use as a fire ring. a 5ft round should do it. I bet I get it free and loaded in my truck too! heheheLincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain
