Hey guys. Wish I had a truck to use with my welding business but I don't. So this is what I'm working with :I've been thinking about making a mount inside and leaving the mig bottle inside my cruiser full time. Maybe a argon bottle too for tig work. Entering into winter, I'm not worried about it warming up too much inside the cab (I probably wouldn't do this during summer, but could I?)So my question is: is this safe? What could happen, a small leak causing asphyxiation? No explosion possible right? I don't plan on leaving the regulator on while in transport. And I wouldn't be asking this q if we were talking about oxy fuel.Dynasty 200DX   (2014)Millermatic 211 (2015)Optrel 864   (2014)Smith Medium duty MBA 30510 (Xmas 2014)Tennsmith 16ga 4ft finger brake (2015)Trailblazer 325 EFI and excel Thermal dynamics Cutmaster 82Miller maxtron 450
Reply:I transport all kinds of gasses inside my sedan. Assuming the risks for the run from the shop to the LWS and back. But everyday? Seems a bit riskier than I would like. I believe argon is heavier than air and there is no odor (propane-added, acetylene naturally stinks). And CO2 is undetectable by humans.Put me down as a vote for "unnecessary risk". Find a better way.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A
Reply:Not safe. You should set up some way to haul it outside the vehicle, like on a roof rack, or one of those baskets to go in a trailer hitch.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:As long as it is secure properly I would do it.
Reply:There are two risks I see: first, if you wreck and the valve gets sheared off, that thing will disembowel or crush you. Second is the asphyxiation issue. I would worry much more about #1. You could always roll with the air on or a window open to prevent asphyxiation. Very few vehicles are air tight and most are built with air exhausts in the rear end somewhere.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:And how do you run that trailblazer? Is the exhaust ported through the roof or something? Is this a joke?Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:I think you will be fine with some precautions. What could happen:-temp over ~120*F, relief valve blows-leak causes asphyxiation-crash knocks valve off tank-crash throws tanks forwardIf you securely mount the tanks facing the opposite direction if your pics, and have some degree of forced air ventilation (independant of AC) while you are in the car, that should eliminate some of the risk. You will still have to remove the MIG tank from the vehicle to use it, but you can leave the argon tank horizontal and use it.Sent from my S4 using TapatalkLast edited by njs552; 11-18-2015 at 05:34 PM.1988 Big 50 Diesel CC/CV1982 Weldanpower 225/2101968 SAE 300 motor generatorMaxstar 200SD2015 AHP 200x"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so." - Ronald Reagan

Reply:Is it April 1st already?! Not to mention it's a violation of DOT regs to carry a tank inside an enclosed vehicle.A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:Dude you need a trailer. An enclosed one maybe with exhaust exit, if you need or want to keep them out of sight and locked. That's some tight quarters there.Thermal Arc 210 - Tweco 211I - Cutmaster 52
Reply:I'm a firefighter and responded to an accident involving an hvac service van. Guy carried all his tools and gas cylinders inside. Even with a protective cargo divider installed- it was no match or all that loose  weight flying around when he drove off the roadway. It was a fatality- smashed his head flater than a pancake. You are on borrowed time working out of a van loaded with that equipment.
Reply:I am thinking the suspension tolerances are close to max as it sets. Must lean into the corners pretty good, is it front wheel drive also? yikes! Driving in the snow and ice ........ fun stuff to think about right there. With that nice welder build a trailer, buy a used one modify to fit your needs. That set up reminds me of the guys that drive around in the cars that do parking lot collision repairs.Magazines have issues, everything else has problems

Reply:It is foolish to have any loose objects in a vehicle. Change, cell phone etc.

Reply:I always have that concern when i carry **** inside the cab. Get into an accident and heavy things are missles. I have the trailblazer mounted to the body with large plates on the underside to act as big washers so i feel im as safe as i can be there. The gas bottles i secure with tie downs when en route, but thats the thing tie downs are not very secure (when in accident) so i was thinking of building a metal rack for the gas bottles so i could leave it in there and have them be much more secure in a accident. By the way im looking at military m101 trailers and the canadian m101 or 416? I think its called. There popular with the 4x4 guys as a trailer for all my gear.  Just trying to find something sub 500 bones.Dynasty 200DX   (2014)Millermatic 211 (2015)Optrel 864   (2014)Smith Medium duty MBA 30510 (Xmas 2014)Tennsmith 16ga 4ft finger brake (2015)Trailblazer 325 EFI and excel Thermal dynamics Cutmaster 82Miller maxtron 450

Reply:Wow I thought I was cheap . Buy a used trailer run it till you decide on something else sell the trailer get your money back. That is sketchy Sent from my C811 4G using TapatalkVantage 300 kubota ,miller 304 xmt ,lincoln ln 25 pro , ranger 305 G, plenty of other tools of the trade to make the sparks fly.
Reply:I saw a good setup in an AT&T van a few weeks ago. They had an explosion proof cabinet mounted to the truck with vents out the top and bottom for fumes. They carry acetylene tanks for the shrink tubing they use for repairs. I carried two or more acetylene tanks for air/gas torch setup for 20 years without a problem but don't think I would any more, except when absolutely necessary.  I don't know if you use the van for anything else but that would be one solution.

Also, I really only went full bore into this business I started about 2 months ago. And next in line for my sig is: Trailer. For all the **** listed above. So give me a break!

Reply:You came and asked on a forum. What did you expect? Get a loan for a trailer or a truck. Doesn't have to be fancy but your customers may have reservations about hiring you when they see your set up. How you show up on the job says a lot about what people will think and also does your advertising. Do you need to be a licensed welder to advertise in your area? Add the cables and other tools and such and you're over $13,000.
