I make a part for a customer that is made out of 303 stainless. It needs a piece of stainless keystock welded to it. I can seem to find any flavor of keystock except 303. What would be the best series of stainless steel to insert in this part? I was trying to match the base metal of the part exactly. Any hints or tips greatly appreciated.
Reply:isn't 309 TIG wire the general go-to for dissimilar metals?Hey~!! It's a hobby. It's not supposed to make sense~!!

Reply:This is a non impact, non loaded or rotating usage. Customer wants the end of a part closed off against basically 5 foot head of water.
Reply:303 welds terrible and 'undercuts' like mad, find 304 or even 18-8 stainless (mcmaster carr)Last edited by MikeGyver; 11-15-2015 at 09:43 PM.Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com
Reply:I'd try 310 and keep the heat down.
Reply:Water? May want to avoid key stock. Seen too much of the crap rust up in food processing plants. If it's not to be used for a key way, and tolerances allow, just get a stick of .25" 304 square stock from your supplier. Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk
Reply:Wondering aloud in print if bronze is the way to go, it would avoid a few problems. Stainless keystock was mentioned in first post.
