53' shorthood having welding issues

I bought the machine a few months ago and finally got around to burnin some 5p downhill and uphill with it yesterday but wasn't very impressed. It seemed to me like it will fire up cold and if I long arc it the slightest it would die out. Even when it started to cooperate for a few seconds it would still die out. I had way too many stops n starts the bead didn't look slick like it should. It was aggravating me Bc it made it seem like I couldn't weld lol and it wasn't Bc the machine was too cold I messed around with it for a good while but then I fired up my lincoln ranger and had no trouble at all out of it. I will add that the shorthood is practically like brand new the motor has been bored with all new internals and the generator has all new brushes maybe it needs to be broke in?? I was just disappointed Bc everyone says the old lincoln gas machines weld like a dream. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it

Reply:Thanks for the advice fellas I'm gonna get a voltmeter and check it out. What gear and voltage do I need to put the machine on to check the ocv's. It only has 4 gears not 5 like the later sa 200s. I think it's set too high anyways because the machine is idled up high it sounds. Sorry for all the questions but this is my first sa 200 and need to get all the bugs worked out of it.
