How thick of steel or stainless can i weld with 200 amps
Reply:As a general rule think of one amp per mil. 200 amps, 200 mils. Other factors will need to be considered with stainless.Last edited by Robert Hall; 07-18-2014 at 11:17 PM.Regards,RobGreat Basin WeldingInstagramBlue weldersRed weldersMy luscious Table DIY TIG Torch cooler
Reply:Unless you are welding a steam roller together 200 amps will get you pretty much anything up to 1/4 maybe a little more without having to run multiple passes. Tig has the benefit of being able to slow down and let some good heat get down in the root of the weld without over feeding filler (as long as your on good terms with your left hand) and if you want a little more heat Try using helium/argon mix next tank fill.. helium lets you get some more umph out of your rig!Like Robert said stainless is another ball game though. I like to run my stainless beads hot and fast, but I don't get to do much stainless over 1/8 inchHope this helps!Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!

Reply:Machine is a fabricator 252i and was looking at ck 200 amp air cooled or crafter series cs300
Reply:If I get water cooled can I go cheap n hook it to water supply
Reply:As far as the right torch to get.... Everyone has their own preference but make sure you get one capable of handling the average amps and amount of welding you will use it for.. The 252i is rated at 250 amps on tig, so if you plan to do a job that will take hours of welding time at peak amps. I would say a water cooled setup rated at least 250 with a 20% duty cycle or more. If you plan to stay under the 200 mark most of the time for short projects I would suggest an air cooled torch as small as possible (they are much lighter than water rigs and have a more manageable whip), you can push a 200 amp torch a little harder for short periods it just cuts your duty cycle way down.I know for a fact guys used to run hi freq boxes on engine drive units with the city water line hooked to their coolant solenoid, they would just let the hot water from the torch run in the street ... Someone else here may be able to answer that a little better concerning new regulations now that tungsten radiation poisoning will be the downfall of civilization and all!!! (At least that's what everyone is now ranting and raving about.!) I'm not quite sure but there would probably need to be some good grounding also so your neighbor doesn't get electrocuted in the shower when you fire off your rig!,,, ha.haHope this helpsReal welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!

Reply:I do mostly art but its 1/4 steel
Reply:You should post a few pictures of what you do! I'd like to see some of your ideas, I think metal art is cool. I've seen some stuff that defies the laws of geometry! Btw if it were me I would lean towards an air cooled torch if your work involves a lot of repositioning, every time you set up for your next weld the torch will be cooling down, and the weight of a water cooled set up with the extra lines and fluid in the whip can become cumbersome in odd positions and angles. I do like a water torch for bench type work where your in pretty much the same seat for hours on end. (Keeps my hand nice and cool...not!!, "if it's not a hot job your not welding")But like I said before there really isn't a right or wrong. It just might take some experimenting.Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
