Just wondering if anyone has a Cutmaster 81 and could provide some feedback on it?  I am looking to add a plasma cutter to my toys   I really would like to get a Powermax 45, but I have an opportunity to pick up a used Cutmaster 81, complete with cart and Motorguard filter for ~ $700.  It appears in good shape and is a 2007 model.I'm somewhat concerned about buying a used plasma cutter, but I know the guy who's selling it and he says it is in good working condition; and at ~ 1/2 the price of the Powermax 45 it seems like a good deal for a 60 amp machine.Any inputs on the Cutmaster 81 would be appreciated. Thanks,John
Reply:I like mine.  Sounds like that one is about the same age too.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Cutmaster 81 is a 60 amp cutter. The new cutmaster 82 is a 80 amp cutter.  The new cutmaster 52 is a 60 amp cutter. The older cutmaster 51 is a 40 amp cutter. All of these units are good cutters.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Good deal for the price if it works!  Much wiser (in my opinion) to purchase a major brand used piece of equipment than one of the imports. Even if it stops you from buying a Hypertherm...oh well.....maybe you will want to upgrade eventually!Jim Originally Posted by giles45shopJust wondering if anyone has a Cutmaster 81 and could provide some feedback on it?  I am looking to add a plasma cutter to my toys   I really would like to get a Powermax 45, but I have an opportunity to pick up a used Cutmaster 81, complete with cart and Motorguard filter for ~ $700.  It appears in good shape and is a 2007 model.I'm somewhat concerned about buying a used plasma cutter, but I know the guy who's selling it and he says it is in good working condition; and at ~ 1/2 the price of the Powermax 45 it seems like a good deal for a 60 amp machine.Any inputs on the Cutmaster 81 would be appreciated. Thanks,John
Reply:I have two Cutmasters, a 151 and a 102. Both cut as advertised. The fans on the newer 102 are loud and run a long time, but that's my only gripe with the newer style machine.Double check the voltage of the 81. The older machines were voltage/phase specific. I like that the new machine can be wired three phase or single phase. I wish my 151 was three phase. Here's a link to the 81 manual:http://www.thermadyne.com/IM_Uploads...0_300X2956.pdfHere's the cutting speed chart:http://www.thermadyne.com/IM_Uploads...CS_CM_81_M.pdfI think it's a good deal. I have a ton of hours on my 151 (big brother to the 81, same vintage) with no issues.
Reply:I would still try and go for the powermax 45. I havent heard a bad word about them. If its price that you are worried about then just shop around. Price does vary with plasma cutters.
Reply:Looks like I am still on the hunt, the Cutmaster 81 was sold by the time I had $$ in hand.  The Powermax 45 is certainly the top pick, but the $1500 price tag is holding me back a little.I already have two band saws (Delta Industrial, Roll-In), an abrasive cut off saw and dry cut saw, so I don't really "need" the plasma cutter for hobby type stuff I am doing.  In fact the Powermax 30 would probably work for almost everything and the price point is more in my range.  So for right now I can afford to sit back and watch for the right deal. Thanks,John
