so, i aquired a 1934 south bend metal lathe with quite a few goodies for $170. i am very new to machining, but im taking vocational classes and reading up on it as well as getting hands on. anyway I wanted to see what type of input you guys had. such as places to get parts(gear sets for the lead screw speed) or to learn to care for and use it.! thanks! jaymiller bobcat 250 ntsouth bend metal latheClausing verticle millrikon 17" bandsaweverlast 250exharris oxyfuel set upspeedglass AD helmet with adflo power respirator.
Reply:They sell reprints of the Southbend lathe books cheap. I think my copy was like $7.95 plus shipping.http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss...to+run+a+lathe.No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:practicalmachinist.com is a good forum for the home machinist.  Lot's of info on there. Those South Bend's are good lathes, especially for a beginner.  The belt drive is very forgiving if you crash it.  The biggest thing on a lathe of that age is to see if the ways are good or if they need to be ground.  Finding parts can be hard.  A lot of times, you have to make them yourself or get them from a parts machine.  I have a lot of South Bend parts.  I bought around twenty lathes and compiled about eight really nice ones.  If you need something, let me know.Got any pics? Reply:Don't have the r5 collet pieces do you?South Bends if not beat are really good lathes. I have a 13 inch and I doubt I will ever get rid of it, I want a new lathe but the southbend will get a permanent too lpost grinder then.
Reply:Are you talking about these? Those are 5-C collets.  If that's not what you're after, get a pic for me and I'll go digging through the pallet racking. Reply:Have fun!The lathe itself is by in large the cheapest part of your new adventure into machining.
Reply:Yep those are the collets  ( got those) there is an a collet tube and pieces parts ( collar ) that you pull the chuck of and use the R5's its what I am looking for.

Reply:Hey firedup,You definitely got a bargain, even if you do need a couple accesories. I have a 1939 SB, 9" that can still hold .0005. I do like the "V" ways over the flat ways. Here's a couple pics & the homemade tool holder I made.Denny Attached ImagesComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:Hey papaharley,Where you located? I've seen several SB's in the last year go really cheap here in SW PA. I almost jumped on a sweet 10" X 36" last summer for $750 & it was very well kept & had the QC gearbox.DennyComplete Welding/Machine/Fab. Reply:not a great picture but it isn't a badf machine going to dail it in today or tomorrow. i have a competition for skills usa welding coming up and im hoping to use my lathe for some parts! came with some different cutters a knurler 3 chucks a tailstock and some other odds and ends. i got it from the same person who sold me my clausing mill that was only $250 with an indexing headmiller bobcat 250 ntsouth bend metal latheClausing verticle millrikon 17" bandsaweverlast 250exharris oxyfuel set upspeedglass AD helmet with adflo power respirator.
Reply:If that is a 9" the 5C collets will only work in a 5C chuck, IE no draw tube. Spindle thru hole is too small. Still a steal for $170.Check out www.plazamachinery.com  Joe Bergamo for parts, he has tons that might not be listed on his website.
Reply:You got 2 excellent deals, a lathe for $170 and a mill for $250, these prices are a little more than scrap value. Just the chuck or GCTP on that lathe are worth $170 or better if they are a name brand. Reply:Hardinge collets, collet chucks and index heads..WOW...I can't afford that stuff but understand that it's absolutely first class.  Check out their online prices and see what I mean.  If you got all that plus a lathe for $170 then you scored big time.  I highly recommend "Machine Shop Practice Vol. 1 and Vol. 2" by K. H. Moltrecht.  Lots of really good info on lathes, cutting tools, mills, shapers, grinders, you name it.  (Don't bother with the section on CNC....it was written in the late 60's/early 70's if memory serves...paper punch tape and all that stuff.)  I thought I knew how to clamp a part in a vise....turns out I didn't.  He covers this in the chapter on shapers. Also, you might try Tools4Cheap for, well, cheap tools for lathes and mills.  It's all Chicom but might be fine for what you need. I've got a mid-70's South Bend 10K and love it.  You can see the quality from 50 feet away. Practical Machinist website has an entire section devoted to South Bend lathes....LOTs of good info there.Enjoy.0Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
