I somehow managed to break my small, cheap vise in half. What can I say, Mongo is strong like bull!Referencing the "International Home Workshop book of Rules", I determined that this entitled me to an upgrade.Bought a Yost 750-DI along with a set of magnetic, padded aluminum 'soft jaws' to protect my 'delicates'.I also bought this stand* for it, 270 pounds of steel off the scrap heap for $.50/LB.  (*some assembly required)Started by cutting the 'smiles' off of the 25" diameter rounds (12' of cutting 3/4" plate with my Spectrum 625, piece of cake!)The plate on the left is almost ready for welding, the right one needs a bit of work. Cut a bevel into both pieces for welding them together since my Millermatic 211 is not rated for this, cranked it to max with some .035, seems to have done the trick.Just over 1.4" thick base.Added some feet:Also some metal casters for moving it around in my shop.Top plate and gussets finished along with the caster mounts, ready to weld lower gussets.Viola'! Done with the fun part.FYI: that gas can in the photo is empty and was purged using soapy water. Safety first (or at least top 5 anyway)!...to be continued...Last edited by LuMax; 09-09-2014 at 02:25 PM.
Reply:Adding some "pretty" to it (I didn't want it to turn orange by next week).Used some grade 8 bolts for the caster axles, this thing should last me a long time.  The rear of the vise makes a great handle, just tip it back and it rolls around beautifully. It's just a shame that it will never look this good again or for very long. Why this height?  The anvil top now aligns perfectly with the top of my welding table, and I can use the jaws that extend above the top to hold stuff that extends off the end or side of the table.Helluva fun project, now back to work.Last edited by LuMax; 09-09-2014 at 02:27 PM.
Reply:I always find things in the "International Home Workshop book of Rules" that work to my benefit.Great looking vise stand btw!
Reply:I can tell you how to keep it looking that good for a long, long time if you want to know.
Reply:Put a cover over it and never use it?
Reply:Very nice. I wondered why you bothered to chop the disks until I saw the wheels. I might have just chopped the back side and kept the additional foot print and weight. Round stands "roll" on their edge, so wheels aren't really even always needed..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:DSW, I actually need the 'smiles' for an upcoming project.
Reply:Congratulations on the new vise. Your stand looks great. Now I'm curious, what do you have planned for the smiles?
Reply:Very nice!GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Very heavy steel rocking bassinets? Comfy!
Reply:Very nice job on that stand. I like the heavy square base with the wheels mounted to it. Real smart design.I made mine from an old 6" pipe flange but it has a 2" thick blind flange under it. I figured the round would be easy to roll but it now tips over when in useSent from my GT-P3113 using TapatalkTOO MANY TOOLS & NO MORE SPACE

Reply:I don't know boys. The rolling vise I just don't get.Wouldn't a post in the ground serve so much better?I think it needs more gussets. Would it be stronger if the were run off the corners? Can you post a picture of the big Yost's lead screw?
Reply:And what is the pin on the barrel of the Yost for? Some sort of retaining thing?

Reply:It was just a gusset question in general not really specific to the stand. I was joking about it needing more though. How does the lock work? is it a pin that clocks into holes or something else?I was just curious if the skimped out on the screw. I can't really make much of it on the video.
Reply:The pin is spring-loaded and locks rotation. There are detentes every 30 degrees and the head spins 360.I hope the mods won't mind me posting a screw photo on the forum.
Reply:Boy welders really love to build burly things! That's a really nice stand.
Reply:Overkill should be the standard.

Reply:Ah ha.... photos of how you made your stand.... wonderful!!! Very nice. Particularly love the addition of the wheels to move it.MM 211Smith Tru Lite O/A set, Thanks Bob!Lincoln AC-225--But you must not change one thing, one pebble, one grain of sand, until you know what good and evil will follow on that act. The world is in balance, in Equilibrium- Ursula K. Le GuinVery nice build - I like the attention paid to setting the height for a secondary purpose. The vise is nice - I wish my rotating vise had a locking pin like that.Mine just locks when I tighten it - which works fine, but having it lock would be a little nicer.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
