A friend of mine called and asked if I could fix the axle on his manure spreader. I've done a few before. Not the nicest work, but not hard to do. I did ask him why he didn't clean it up a bit.   Oh well, I've worked on worse.Got the axle cut out.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Got the spindles cut out and mostly cleaned up before I ran out of grinder wheel.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Had this plow beam so even tho it's only 5" rather than 6" that was original, it's much heavier so it will be ok. Marked it and squared the end, then realised those holes were too close so I recut the first end. Not the first mistake I've made, might not be the last either.Got it cut to length and mostly cleaned up before it started raining again.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Finished up this job today. Started by marking out the inner plate on the spindle so it would fit in the New beam. Then cut it to fit and got it cleaned and ready to assemble. Then found this gangly inside.  that little sucker was just close enough to reach so I could get it out. Cut this hole for access for welding the inner spindle plate. Then fit the spindle to the beam.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Then just weld it together. Welded the inner plate first. Wasn't able to domu h as far as cleanup, but there really wasn't much rust so I think it'll be ok.Then welded the outer plate on.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Then welded the cutout back in. Wind came up for a bit and gave me a bit of porosity in the one leg. The cleaned and prepped the spreader for the axle.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Lots of rust here and since the new beam is smaller I had to use some filler plates.Forgot to get pics with the wheels on, but everything fit good. Should out last the owner.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Looks like a fantastic repair! The last 30-years of my dad's career he built sewage treatment plants. Not bad in the construction phase, but when the plant went on line. Not so fun then!Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:My brother inlaw used to do contract sandblasting and would get the job cleaning pumps and valves on sewer pump stations , they would lower him down in a bosens seat all kitted out in rain gear and the like . When he was finished he always threw the rain suits away , (brand new only used once ) Ha HA
Reply:I worked on a few sewage, and water treatment plants for my dad. I don't ever remember being on site when they went on line. In the early 1960s he was project superintendent on a 60-million dollar sewage treatment plant in North San Jose California. Wonder what the dollar value of that would be today?Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Min-oooo-er is good for the sinuses, and makes you think clearly in the morning Nice job welding inside the tubing.  Had to be tight.I've seen stuff like that that's got a flange on the inside portion, and they plug weld the flange thru the outside where there's holes drilled during the manufacturing process.  Long as it's at the right depth, and centered, the inner portion is just for leverage to offset the spindle.  Matter of fact, my hay rake has the plug weld method for the end pins on the rake arms."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Here is one I did about 5 years ago. Still spreading today. Not my torch work though. Love that farm work. Spent last weekend crawling around in silos fixing unloaders before the girls and guys come in for winter.
