The pup has reached age where he's starting to wander, and it's time for a back gate.I'm using some 14ga tubing that I thought had been laying on some wood sleepers for the last 5yrs, maybe more. Turns out that the wood had sunk into the ground, and the metal was actually resting on the dirt all these years So it's in rough shape. I'm thinking the years of corrosion has reduced the ga of the material significantly, but WTF, might as well use it. Makes it a devil to weld now that it's a bit thinner, and full of pits. 14ga is on the very edge of what self shielding flux core will successfully deal with.Any stock will be somewhat over length. In this case I want 2 ten foot pieces from the 20 foot full stick. ALWAYS MEASURE FROM BOTH ENDS, AND SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE, DON'T ASSUME THE LENGTH IS UNIFORM. All 4 of the sticks were different lengths by up to 1/2"If you have a problem with fitup, say you have a gap............ Shove a screwdriver in there to hold the gap, then tack on either side of the screwdriver. Any type of wedge will do, doesn't have to be a screwdriverThe screwdriver when removed, and your nice perfect dimension has been maintainedI'm sorta geometry challenged, and I prefer, when necessary, to do a direct measurement/markup. This is a diagonal braceMore to come if my internet connection holds up..........."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Turned out nice and snug. The other side had a bit of an issue Caught my shirt on fire when using the razor wheel to cut the angle, and sorta got distracted Made me jump, and the grinder sorta moved a bitAnyways, they're probably gonna be done today, at least the panels. Still have to dig post holes, and do the gatepost thingYou rollcage, race car tubing, guys are probably shaking your heads about now But ya gotta remember that I don't do much of this fancy azz angle stuff"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:I've got a LOT of shirts that look like that....Was wearing a T-shirt the other day while welding (with arm sleeves, BTW). It had a big oval hole burnt hole in the belly area. Went to take a shower that night and had a big oval red burn spot on my belly. The hot shower water DID NOT feel good on it. |
