I've been using a Harris flowmeter regulator which attaches to my CO2 tank with an adapter. I removed the regulator and am trying to attach the 601 dual gauge Harris to the tank using the same adapter. From what I can tell, the attachment end of both regulators are identical in thread and dimension yet when tightly fastened, the 601 leaks badly around the threads but the flowmeter doesn't. I've used teflon tape which only partly helps. Can I use a standard O ring or small rubber washer at the end of the male regulator fitting to stop the leakage? Or is there a better way?
Reply:At those pressures, the 100+ year old design called for properly machined, clean connections that are crushed together to form a positive seal.Disassemble and check to make sure that all parts are clean and shaped properly. The tapers should be smooth and fit together well. Most likely suspect is that the bottle was dropped or thumped and the fitting is dinged or out of shape.Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A

Reply:I posted something I found last night but today my post had vanished. Odd. Anyway, I used a digital caliper and measured the diameter of the tapered ends on both of the regulators. The 601 regulator was .10 mm smaller in diameter so that's the problem. The flowmeter end is perfectly sized to match the adapter but the 601 end is too small. So I cut down a neoprene washer to fit the adapter cavity and that worked fairly well but it's not thick enough to cut off all the leakage. Today I'm going to find a thick O ring which should take care of it.My adapter came with a washer but it's for the tank end, not the regulator end.

Reply:I'm selling my Hobart and I wanted to see which regulator I liked best. The one I don't like as well goes with the Hobart. The other one stays with my Lincoln. I'm rather disturbed that there was such a difference in end sizes, they should have been identical. That makes me wonder which one will fit a C20/25 tank if I ever get one.The fat O ring worked perfectly, no leakage. Maybe I'll let the 601 go and keep the flow meter. I don't like it's fragility (the glass tube) but I do like that it fits the CO2 adapter perfectly without any O ring modification. Maybe that's not a good reason but it's the only one I have at the moment. :-) Do you have any opinion on which one would be better for MIG? Maybe it doesn't make any difference.
