Hey everyone, I'm trying to bend some 35 ID 42 OD pipe in my standard jack operated pipe bender. But every time I try, I get to about 15 degrees and the pipe kinks. Its got blue paint on the end of the pipe so not sure if that means its high tensile or not. Using the right sized die and roller setting for for the pipe but just kinks every time. Any suggestions?
Reply:Maybe preheat it a bit with the rosebud?Currently working as a Paralegal, but still interested in hobby welding.Miller Bobcat 225ntOne- Character Fractions: ¼ ½ ¾ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞

Reply:I had a hydraulic pipe bender years ago that, if you were going to make a 90 degree bend, couldn't be done in one shot. It had to be done in increments, according to the users manual. This was a high end unit, too...Rich
Reply:What do you mean by increments?
Reply:I have a pipe kinker  ( as I call it)  Is it electrical conduit ?I have been able to get some acceptable bends by doing as  steelsurgeon says bend a small amount then move the pipe about an inch then bend some, move bend, and so on.It is difficult with that style bender. Good luck.
Reply:The pipe is just plain black pipe. I'm unable to fill it with sand due to the long lengths I have

Reply:What is the radius of the bend you are trying to make? Are you sure it is pipe you are bending?

Reply:you dont have to weld caps on the pipe, just use duct tape on the ends, the sand will not be forced out..Of all the things I lost I miss my mind the most...I know just enough about everything to be dangerous......You cant cure stupid..only kill it...

Reply:Originally Posted by weldypants^^^This is the problem.  Use Seamless pipe, and it will bend clean.  You can bend seamed pipe as well, but you have to really pay attention to where the seam is located on your bend.  This has been discussed on numerous forums ad nauseam with similar results.Pipe benders bend pipe, and quality pipe at that.  They can bend cheap black pipe as mentioned if filled with sand. They will not bend tube with out major mods.Use the right size PIPE for the correct die, and they do work - I have bend quite a bit with these benders using quality materials and good practices.BTW pipe won't be measured in mm...... but in Nominal Pipe Size in inches.  These inches will correspond with the dies you have.Good Luck!

Reply:What is a "standard Jack operated pipe bender"?  HF brand if so then there is a member here who can get good bends, he made picknick tables.  Otherwise ,  never seen it not kink without modifications.
Reply:Originally Posted by kuzineddieJust don't use the rosebud after packing and sealing the ends.  You will eventually have a sand cannon!

Reply:Here is a sample of bends with the 12 ton, 2" sch 40, one shot 90 degree bends. an two 70 degree bends for a swing set. I use the same pipe bender to bend 3/8"x4" flat for bench frames and to squash pipe ends instead of coping for quick welds. Attached Images
Reply:Excuse my ignorance but what is sch 40 pipe?
Reply:"Schedule" is the term for the wall thickness of pipe. Schedule 40 is the most commonly used of all the schedules. Here's a  color chart that shows the different schedules of different size pipes...http://www.engineersedge.com/pipe_schedules.htmRich
Reply:Schedule 40 Pipe refers to the wall thickness of the pipe (relative to its size) and is often referred to as STD (standard) pipe as well.Schedules range from 5-180 (thin-thick wall)Pipe is measured by NPS (nominal pipe size)1/8"-12" pipe is measured by the Inside Diameter (nominal)14" and up is measured by the Outside Diameter.Tubing is measured by its outside diameter x its wall thickness.
