I found a Thermal Dynamics Pak Master 25 plasma cutter on craigslist here for $100. The ad says hardly used but that it has stopped cutting. It will turn on but won't cut. Anyhow, I told one of my welding teachers and he said that's a steal. He said if I can get it that I could bring it in and they would see what needs to be done for me. Anyhow, I was just wondering if anyone can give me some hints as to what might be keeping it from cutting? I don't have any more info about it. Maybe just some past experiences with fixes you all have had to do in similar situations.Do what it takes to get the job done right.
Reply:Have you looked at the machine? It could be something as simple as consumables (like the start cartridge) or even a faulty (loose) ground clamp. You really need to know what's happening, does the air start? What lights are one? Any flashing lights? I'd start by finding the manual and looking through the troubleshooting. I tried to find the manual for the 25 but only found a 50 and 75... maybe you can find the manual. http://www.thermadyne.com/index.php/...iterature.htmlThe first thing Thermal Dynamics service will have you do if the machine fails to cut is replace all the consumables, including the start cartridge. If it attempts to start but just doesn't really go... it's generally consumables or bad ground. For $100 bucks you can likely take the gamble.
Reply:Don't buy it sight unseen. Pay cash only, in person. The electrode and/or the nozzle may be burned up. You can buy a package of 7 for about $70. The electrodes+nozzles are considered "consumable" parts. They need to be replaced periodically. Same for the start cartridge. But it sounds like the guy selling it is clueless and might not be aware of this fact.Or else it's a scam.Ask him casually if he's tried to have it repaired.
Reply:I won't buy it without having the guy fire it up for me to see what it's doing. I haven't had any luck with responses by email. So, if it's still available this friday i'm going to call him. Consumables is what i'm thinking too. The guy says he used it a couple times and it stopped cutting. This makes me think he isn't the original owner and/or is uneducated on the machine.I'll be sure to ask if he's tried to have it repaired.Do what it takes to get the job done right. |
