Guys, by the end of the week I should be ready to start putting my SA 200 back together, and have been thinking of how to add some auxillary AC power to the machine.  I know you can add a power inverter, but I have a 3000 watt belt drive generator head that I am not using so I have been thinking.  Has anyone attempted to mount a belt drive generator head to the side and run it off the belt of the SA 200's engine belt?  Do you think the F-163 has 5hp to spare to pull the additional generator?  Honestly I doubt that I would run the generator and weld at the same time anyway, but I would hate to overload the engine as well.  Just thought I would ask for opinions.~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Yeah it would work. I think it would be a good idea to use a separate belt though. You would have to set it up with a ratio that would give you a 3600 generator shaft speed while the engine is turning 1550. Comes out to 2.32 to 1.If you add a second shieve to the front of the harmonic balancer, keep it as close to the other one as possible. Otherwise you will wear the hell out of the front main bearing. It would be nice if the belt to your AC generator pulled from the opposite direction of the fan belt. That way it would counteract forces.I don't know how you have the welder mounted on a truck or trailer, but what if you put your AC generator underneath the welder. Underneath and favoring the intake/exhaust/manifold side of the machine might not be too bad a placement.Just make sure the generator head can get good airflow. Otherwise it will overheat if you push it hard.Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:My 1st thought would be could you just use a standard 12v or 24v inverter like those used to power tools from truck batteries and the truck alternator. I would think getting 12v-24v DC shouldn't be that hard, but what do I know about electronics. One site I was looking at for various units.http://www.theinverterstore.com/the-...D=116060172511
Reply:Well the inverter is definitely a possiblity.  I was just trying to think of how to use the generator that I already had.  If an inverter is used just how large an inverter could successfully be installed without causing problems?  About the largest thing that I would run would be my hypertherm 30 plasma.  Would the inverter cause a problem in that situation?I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Since a mag fired engine doesn't require much battery charging, you could replace the stock alternator with the 120VAC unit, then mount a small on-board charger to maintain the starting battery. Trouble is, the Continental is sparse on room or mounting holes in the belt-drive area.Good Luck
Reply:You know I was thinking that too, but I figured the AC generator was too big for that spot. You bastard, you are always stealing my thoughts. How the H do you do that?Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:What if you mounted it above the exciter? and belt drove it off the end somehow.Somehow I think the whole thing would work better if you just bought one of those 150 buck engines off of harbor freight and used that to power the generator. I think it would be a little easier on fuel.Or you could get a drive motor off an electric pallet jack. Probably be best to get one from a Raymond (they are shunt wound),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,  ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,  ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''  ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''  ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''  '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''  ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''',,,  ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Oh never mind.Joewww.CummingsHauling.com
Reply:well, I jave just about decided to use this head I have to build a small generator with.  So I am gonna add an inverter.  I already have the mounts to put a new 125 amp Delco alternator on the F-163.  My next question.....  How large of an inverter can I safely get by with?I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:I was told by the guy I deal with for my batteries and alternators that I can easily run a 3000W inverter from my truck at idle or low rpm and power basically whatever the unit will handle, non stop no problem. I was thinking saws and such myself, but he said he has one customer that runs an electic jackhammer from an inverter. Some of this will depend on how you hook up the unit, to the welder or the alternator/battery. I have no idea how many volts the welder will produce on weld power. That I think you need to talk to someone who knows the specific inverter you might be thinking about.I doubt you will find it feasible to run the plasma, The big 7000w inverter on the page I posted probably costs more than a good genset. For tools like saws and grinders, 3000 watt/ 6000 watt surge should do more than enough and should run off the alternator and battery.

Reply:Denrep thanks. That is the simplest and most understandable way anyone has shown to  explain this. I forget what the size of the twin alternators are on the truck, but it should be close to keeping up. And I should have been able to figure that out. Doh!Any idea how you figure battery discharge if the engine is not running? How long a given size battery would last?

Reply:Ok it is as simple as it looks. I figured there had to be something I was missing there.
