I have a 1969 red face that I wanted to take the governor off of to try to repair an oil leak, possibly the gasket's bad. None of the manuals I have seem to talk about it, but do you have to remove part or all of the magneto to get the top bolt of the governor off? The bolt on the top of the governor appears to go through and be welded to a small piece of flat stock, approx 1/2"x3".
Reply:I believe the top bolt is the only one that has anything to do with the magneto.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:Right... I can see the other end of the bottom governor bolt, but the top one, I can only see the one end, by the radiator. I don't want to mess with the magneto unless I absolutely have to, as it runs pretty good, and most importantly, I don't know anything about magnetos, like how to tune/time them!
Reply:Go to http://billswelderrepair.com and their page has a pdf. to download about timing the mag to the engine. This thread tells how, too. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...magneto+timing I think if you remove the governor tho, the magneto will remain in place with the bottom bolt in the magneto.Last edited by gizzardgutz; 07-05-2009 at 10:12 PM.Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money. -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:No, it does not. I assume the dot in the picture is some kind of timing/alignment mark?
Reply:skiprrr, denrep's not on so I'll explain in his absence. The dot that he points out with the yellow line is a timing mark - one of two - on the governor drive gear (you can see the second one just above the line and to the left of the one pointed out. These two marks line up on either side of a single mark on the cam gear (if the engine is rotated from the position shown in his photo).Once these three marks are lined up the drive slot in the governor gear will be horizontal and the #4 piston will be at TDC (Top Dead Center) on the compression stroke. At this point you would rotate the mag CW by hand until it fires at the #4 cylinder position (plug wire hooked to spark plug and plug sitting on and grounded to the cylinder head so you can see the spark).Rotate the mag drive back CCW approximately 1/4 turn so the drive lug will line up with the governor gear slot, install the mag and snug it down.Crank the engine which should start and check the timing with a timing light (timing mark is a sideways '8' shaped hole in engine-to-generator adapter plate.Last edited by duaneb55; 07-06-2009 at 11:33 PM.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!

Reply:When the govna' is pulled, it will disengage from the drive tang on the mag and the drive gear teeth. The pen points between two adjacent teeth which each have a punch mark, The two marked teeth must saddle one marked tooth on the engine gear, to place the governor at the OE timed position.Good LuckEdit - I cross posted with Duaneb55, but he describes it well.Last edited by denrep; 07-06-2009 at 11:43 PM.
