I need to build a small heat/cook stove for my place this winter. It is about 350 sq feet and is not insulated the best. I was thinking aboout have a inlet pipe that pull air in from out side and would like to get a few hours of burn time. Any ideas? Thanks
Reply:I would try a rocket stove design like this one: They use next to no fuel and get really hot. With clever routing of the exhaust pipe you get additional radiant heat!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Not really looking into a rocket stove. I have allreay have a coulple cords of wood and looking for something for like a mini kitchen style cook stove.

Reply:one thing to keep in mind when making a wood stove is the ability to control draft. my parents have a lopi brand stove that is awesome. it will literally run you out of the house in the winter time. there was many storming nights with the windows open to cool us off. having long single wall flue will allow you to scavenge as much heat from the exhaust as possible. the LOPI has a damper that can be opened to direct the smoke straight up the chimney, and once you have the chimney good and hot to create a natural draft you can close the damper and it directs the smoke and flames forward to roll across the door and up the front of the stove to heat it all up. The inside was lined in fire brick so it didn't warp the steel or get it red hot and leave a pile of hot mill scale on the hearththe handle at the bottom is the draft air control Attached ImagesTeach Ag Mech - Mike At Home:Lincoln Electric AC225Miller Challenger 172Gas AxeWork:eclectic bunch of 90's vintage blue boxes

Reply:The heating & cooking would sort of complicate things for me. Most folks cook standing up. Cook stoves typically have the fire box up high, close to the cooking surface for better heat control and heat control. Heating stoves have the fire box down low and quite large. Reply:Makes me think of what all the old timers called a 'trash burner'. Cooking height. One burner wide, two burners deep. Fire box below the burner plates (doh), then an ash pan below the fire box and a raised base. Nice little units. It was the 1st stove that got fired up in the early morning, get the coffee pot on there, get some heat in the kitchen while waiting for someone to clean out the big heating stove and get it fired up. They used yesterdays paper trash, news papers, milk cartons, just about anything burnable that could be crunched in there. Feed it some kindlin and a little lump of coal and life was good. Reply:Ha!! If I had talent and patience I'd build me this one here. If I knew it was going to remain in one location maybe build the lower main out of a bit heavier material. Make the top bolt on replaceable. http://www.transoceanltd.com/applian...sheepherd.htmlI was looking for sheep herders stove because that was what we called the one the northern tool link shows. All the sheep herders wagons had in them.Last edited by Sandy; 09-16-2014 at 10:59 PM."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
