I have a Bobcat that I'm been using here at the house to learn how to TIG...it's working great running the HF-251d, but I'm too close to my neighbors and it's too loud to run very often.  I'm not good enough yet but I can see that it'll be nice in the future to be able to control the heat with the foot pedal too.  Duty cycle doesn't matter, this is going to be used just for automotive tubing/manifolds (SS/MS/Aliminum) with a lot of downtime in between. So, any opinions are appreciated as far as what I should be looking at, there are really only 3 requirements:1. Needs to be compatible with the control cable from the HF-251d2. Must be single phase3. Good bang for the buck, used is fine, preferred actually.Any input is greatly appreciated, I'm a beginner so I value the experience that y'all might be willing to share.
Reply:Material thickness (in particular aluminum) would determine the machine required but to be comparable to the Bobcat I'd say the ever popular Syncrowave 250 would be an excellent choice.Definately nothing smaller than a Syncrowave 200 if you're going to be doing any amount of aluminum up to 3/16".  Better to have more power than you think will be needed on a regular basis.Either one of these machines wouldn't need the HF-251D that you could sell to help pay for the shop machine.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:Thank you.  For some reason I hadn't really considered getting rid of the freaq box and just buying exactly what I needed...I was stuck in some sort of brain rut.
Reply:Well you could use the HF-251D with any AC/DCstick machine too but you'd also probably want to find one that has or is capable of remote current control and a weld output contactor or you'd be in the same boat as the Bobcat as far as operational features.  Hence my suggestion regarding a machine designed for TIG from the get go.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:That would work with my Miller Shopmaster. You can look for one, but they are few and far between, and usually in the $1000 - $1500 range. Very nice welder though. And do not confuse the Shopmaster with the Shopmate. The Shopmate is DC only, so no aluminum."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:You could also try muffling the exhaust with an additional muffler and putting sound deadening mat inside the doors and sheet metal on the Bobcat to reduce noise.
